Abidjan

Abidjan is the financial capital of the Ivory Coast and the fourth largest city in Africa.  It has a modern, vibrant feel, and is a popular destination with entrepreneurs as well as tourists.

Abidjan highlights

Book a flight to Abidjan with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover a country that has asserted itself as one of the world’s best holiday destinations. On your trip to Abidjan, you’ll find busy markets and street-side stalls selling trinkets, clothing, and delicious food. You’ll also have the opportunity to hear live Zouglou music on virtually every corner, and meet some of the friendliest people on Earth.

  • Tourist attractions

A central feature of Abidjan is the array of water taxis that carry passengers across the adjacent lagoon, where you can get a superb view of the city. It’s a great way to spend an hour or two and is suitable for the whole family. Alternatively, you can catch a water bus to the capital of the Ivory Coast, Yamoussoukro.

  • Leisure activities

If you want your visit to Abidjan to encompass more than the city, it’s well worth heading to Comoé National Park. Made up of lush dense forests, occasionally scythed by bubbling streams, the park is home to  many chimpanzees. It’s best to visit Comoé in the dry season, as you’ll see a wide variety of animals coming to drink from the impressive River Comoé. Guided tours are available.

However, most people visit Abidjan for its fabulous beach, Sassandra. With powder-soft sands lapped by glittering waters, it’s the absolute embodiment of a tropical paradise. If topping up your tan loses its appeal, there’s a quaint fishing village nearby, where you can see the locals going about their daily business.

  • Food

While there are restaurants in Abidjan, you’ll find most of the locals gathering at the ‘maquis’. These are open-air restaurants that range from wood-framed kiosks with the diners seated on the ground, to a collection of tables and chairs surrounding rotisserie spits that perfume the air with the smell of grilling chicken or fish.

Be sure to try the shawarmas: roasted chicken, spiced and served on a bed of lettuce.

  • Shopping

Shopping in the city is almost a national sport, and you can’t travel to Abidjan without visiting one of the local markets. You’ll find clothing, trinkets, leatherware and even musical instruments on sale – and it’s worth remembering that haggling is considered a routine part of market shopping. Adjame and Treichville markets are considered to be two of the best in the area.
