While most tourists head for Istanbul and Ankara, flights to Adana with Qatar Airways allow you to discover a stunning location full of history and beautiful sites, but without the crowds.

Adana highlights

Adana is Turkey’s sixth largest city and an important centre for commerce, making it a popular destination for both leisure and business travellers. Surrounded by countryside with plenty to see and do, Adana is a must to add to your list of places to see.

Book a flight to Adana with Qatar Airways and discover a rich, ancient city a little off the tourist trail, but filled with delightful sights and things to do.

  • Tourist attractions

Travel to Adana and you’ll be stepping into a city with 8,000 years of history. With such a pedigree, you’re bound to come across ancient monuments as you wander through the narrow streets of the Old Quarter. One of the most imposing buildings in the city is the Sabancı Merkez Camii mosque, which sits on the left bank of the Seyhan River. This is one of the largest mosques in the Middle East, and is a tranquil and spiritual place – the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The city is filled with mosques, and the stunning Ulu Cami mosque is one of the oldest. It dates to the 16th century, and is famous for its bold black and white marble designs and intricately carved window frames.

Head even further back in time and you’ll find the Romans left their mark in this city too. The Roman stone bridge over the river Seyhan is believed to date back to the time of Emperor Hadrian. It originally had 21 arches, although seven of these are now submerged. It’s remarkably well preserved, and served the city as a busy traffic route over the river right up until 2007.

If you love history then pay a visit to the city’s Archaeology Museum, which is particularly well- known for its collection of ancient Roman statues.

  • Leisure activities

The locals spend their evenings at the lake, one of the city’s many open spaces. This charming spot is perfect for an evening walk or an afternoon picnic, and offers welcome relief from the heat of the city. Other natural spots nearby are the Akyatan lagoon, and the magnificent Kabuzbasi waterfall, a natural wonder with falls that plummet 75m into a ravine. The area is ideal if you love hiking and mountaineering. The surrounding countryside around Adana is stunning, and relatively unknown, making it an ideal destination if you’re travelling to Adana with adventure in mind.

If you’re here with the family then one of the most popular spots is the nearby Aqualand, a water park that’s packed with rides, wave pools, a lazy river, and slides. It’s a perfect day out that the children will love.

The Turkish bath ritual is an important part of Turkish culture, and a great way to relax and unwind. There are traditional Turkish baths in Adana, where you can get a traditional treatment and relax the day away.

A day exploring the ancient towns and sites that dot the landscape is a must when you travel to Adana.

  • Food

Top of the list of food to try has to be the Adana Kebab, a delicious, spicy dish made from lamb and chili flakes, and usually served with charred peppers, salad, and lavaş - a soft flatbread. This traditional dish is washed down with Şalgam (turnip juice), a delightful drink. Another speciality of the city is bici bici, a dessert made with rose and cherry syrups, served throughout the city in many cafés and restaurants.

  • Shopping

While the city is thousands of years old, it is also a modern and thriving centre with a great selection of shopping experiences. Take a stroll around the Old Quarter of the city and you’ll find lmany shops selling traditional goods. If you’re looking for something special then head to İnönü Caddesi 71, right in the heart of the city, next to the new tourist office. Here you’ll find many shops that sell hand-crafted jewellery, finely painted ceramics and many more examples of local handicrafts, all at reasonable prices. This is the place to head to if you want to buy something to remember your travels to Adana.
