Qatar welcomes world's first commercial flight on GTL jet fuel

Qatar Airways makes historic journey from London Gatwick to Doha, marking the world’s first commercial passenger flight powered by a fuel made from natural gas. The six-hour journey was operated with our Airbus A340-600 aircraft using Rolls-Royce Trent 556 engines.

The State of Qatar is set to become the world’s leading producer of GTL kerosene when it is put into commercial production from 2012.  Qatar Airways looks forward to continuing to work with the consortium members to further develop this exciting project and commit towards a cleaner environment.

A Word from Qatar Airways' CEO
Qatar Airways has grown from operating a single aircraft in 1994 to over 60 new-generation aircraft today. We connect people and places from every corner of the globe and keep businesses on the move with over 80 destinations worldwide. As an industry leader, Qatar Airways and our group of companies strive to be the best in everything we do; and an integral part of being an industry leader is to help lead the charge towards environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility. We are leaders in new-generation fuel research, and are giving back to the communities in which we serve. We take our responsibility in protecting the environment seriously, and are confident in our abilities to play an integral role.

Qatar Airways has realised that it is important to go beyond the current industry best practices for fuel and environmental management in order to ensure a sustainable future for the airline, its staff and its neighbourhoods. We have the responsibility to deal with the impact on global climate change, noise, local air quality, non-renewable resources and waste. With that we have a direct economical impact on global climate change and environmental costs as well as a direct and indirect economic impact on society.

Therefore Qatar Airways created the innovative “Five Pillar Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy” which embraces Change Management, Environment, Integrated Fuel Management, Communication and leads to Sustainable Development. It goes without saying that our children’s future depends on the responsible actions of Qatar Airways, its peers, other industries, and you. Let’s all strive to make a difference so that future generations can enjoy a world of environmental sustainability.
