Day 1: Munich

Music is a major part of Munich’s identity, and the famous Glockenspiel show in Marienplatz delights all ages. While there, take the elevator to the New Town Hall’s observation deck for breath-taking panoramas of the medieval city. Explore royal palaces like the Munich Residenz, filled with valuable treasures and impressive art, then sit back to watch a classical concert. After a guided tour, end your day by relaxing in the English Garden – one of the world’s largest urban parks.

Day 2: Neuschwanstein Castle

Set off on a short journey from Munich to arrive in the town of Füssen, home to the inspirational and exquisite Neuschwanstein Castle. Surrounded by forested hills, its soaring turrets and towers make it a spectacular fairytale vision. Take a guided tour to learn about its creator, King Ludwig II, the ‘Mad King of Bavaria’. Don’t forget to visit the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle, before wandering through Füssen’s medieval streets lined with cafés, shops and pretty squares.

Day 3: The Romantic Road

Travel from Füssen to central Bavaria on a scenic section of Germany’s Romantic Road. Stop for lunch in Augsburg, one of the oldest cities in the country. It’s full of Renaissance buildings and cosy cafés where you can try schneeballen, a traditional Bavarian pastry. Once you’ve indulged yourself, continue to the walled town of Dinkelsbühl. You’ll pass by rolling hills and picture-postcard villages along one of Germany’s most beautiful driving routes.

Day 4: Nurenburg

Complete with its own castle and winding cobbled streets, Nuremberg is one of Germany’s most captivating cities. Stroll through the castle complex to uncover medieval towers and sweeping views. Head to  Handwerkerhof, the artisan quarter, where craftspeople sell traditional Black Forest wood carvings and souvenirs. After shopping, feast on hearty German fare in one of the many welcoming taverns or restaurants dotted throughout the Old Town.

Day 5: Lake Königssee

Spend your last day in Bavaria at Lake Königssee, an emerald-green fjord set against the Alpine peaks of Jenner, Hagen and Watzmann. Take a two-hour ferry cruise to marvel at the vistas and hear the famous echo. When the boat docks, go for a walk on the lakeside paths and treat yourself to lunch at a waterside eatery. It’s the perfect finale to your Bavarian adventure before the trip back to Munich.
