It may be smaller than many north American cities, but it celebrates this fact by revelling in a laid-back, relaxed pace of life that has made it a very desirable place to live.
Book a flight to Halifax, Nova Scotia with Qatar Airways and surprise yourself at just how easy going and friendly city life can be, while business travellers will find that behind the relaxed façade is a thriving city built on innovation.
Dominating the city is The Halifax Citadel (Fort George) – a classic fort situated on top of Citadel Hill and giving visitors a breathtaking view of the harbour below.
Strategically important and now one of Canada’s most visited Heritage sites, the Citadel hosts re-enactments for visitors to get an authentic taste of early Canadian life.
Canada's equivalent of New York's Ellis Island, Pier 21 has now been turned into the National Immigration Museum, charting the lives and history of immigrants to this tough and rugged part of the country.
The historic waterfront building processed over a million immigrants, and has now been converted to house a collection of artefacts and exhibitions.
One of the best ways to find out about a culture is to study its art, and the diminutive but beautifully laid-out Art Gallery of Nova Scotia highlights the works of local artists such as folk artist Maud Lewis and Alex Colville, an exponent of the hyperrealist movement.
It also houses an excellent collection of traditional Mik'maq aboriginal art, as well as one-off exhibitions.
