Book flights to Gothenburg

Sweden’s second-largest city sits on the country’s west coast and is home to a popular university, giving it a young and vibrant atmosphere. Book a flight to Gothenburg with Qatar Airways and you will quickly find it to be a lively, energetic city with a distinctive personality.

A city brimming with natural beauty, Gothenburg is divided into various provinces, each with its own personality. The port is the centre of activity, with a large marina that offers various water sports such as sailing and yacht racing. A trip to Gothenburg includes plenty of concert halls and entertainment venues, as well as small, family-run restaurants, excellent hotels, and a very good road system connecting it to the rest of Scandinavia. It is also a major Nordic centre for tech start-ups, with a high number of entrepreneurs and innovators working within the city limits.

Gothenburg travel highlights

Known for its vibrant entertainment and music scene, Gothenburg is a welcoming and friendly city, offering visitors a real ‘village’ feel on Sweden's west coast.

  • Tourist attractions

Take a stroll up the hill southwest of the city centre and you will come to the 17th-century fort known as Skansen Kronan (or “Crown Keep”).  Close by is the historic district of Haga, which is filled with traditional wooden Scandinavian houses. Here you will find plenty of studios and galleries selling artisan goods, artwork and jewellery.

The city has several museums, including the Gothenburg City Museum, the fascinating Museum of World Culture, as well as two museums charting the city’s nautical history: the Maritiman, which displays 19 full-size ships and boats, and the Maritime Museum.

A trip to Gothenburg reveals a city with plenty of green spaces to explore, including Slottsskogen, which is popular with the locals for summer barbeques. The park has plenty to keep everyone entertained, and is home to an observatory and a children’s zoo. Head here in early summer and catch a magnificent floral display of the park’s collection of 60 different types of azaleas.

  • Leisure activities

Cycling is hugely popular in Gothenburg, and you will find it the easiest way to get around this very compact city. Rent a bike and make your way through the city’s network of cycle paths and explore the city like a local while packing in as much sightseeing as you can.

If you have children with you then a visit to Liseberg is a must. This is the largest theme park in Scandinavia and home to a traditional wooden roller coaster as well as plenty of other rides and amusements. You will also find music concerts and festivals in the park during the summer.

Tourist boats run along the city’s canals and provide a relaxing and enjoyable activity to see Gothenburg from a different perspective. During the summer, you can take a boat tour over to the Southern Archipelago, where the islands are tranquil and relaxing, as well as traffic-free. For classical entertainment, you can either visit the Göteborg Opera House or the Gothenburg Concert Hall for music and drama all year round.

  • Food

The cuisine is varied in Gothenburg, and you will find the greatest concentration of restaurants along Linnégatan, which is in the centre of the city and runs from Järntorget to Linnéplatsen. Here you will find reasonably priced outlets serving everything from Turkish kebab to vegetarian buffets. Local food is primarily fish-based, thanks to the city’s history as a port. If you do try the local street food then order the Swedish variation of a hot dog, which is served with mashed potato and shrimp salad.

  • Shopping

If shopping is part of your plan during your visit to Gothenburg, head for Nordstan. This is the main shopping area for the city and has plenty of Scandinavian and international brands on offer. For smaller, more intimate fashion boutiques, head to the Arkaden mall, or the NK shopping centre for high-end brands.

Be aware that prices in Scandinavia are high, but the quality of goods is exceptionally good. And as haggling is a rare act in Swedish shops, you will probably end up paying the price quoted on the ticket. Shop around before making a final decision, and look out for local flea and antique markets at the weekend for bargain hunting.
