The great Jama Masjid Mosque can hold 25,000 worshippers in its vast courtyard, and the nearby bazaar of Chandni Chowk is famous for its labyrinthine streets and carts selling everything from spices to sweets and souvenirs.

Arriving in Delhi

India’s capital can be overwhelming at first, but once you get your bearings in this huge metropolis it is a fascinating, energetic and eccentric location that will utterly charm you with its warmth and character. Packed full of historical sites, an ultra-modern commercial centre and huge temples, it is an eclectic mix of old and new.

Book a flight to Delhi with Qatar Airways and you’ll be enchanted with this incredible city from the moment you touch down. With a heritage that is said to date back over 5,000 years, it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, turning it into a maze of streets, squares, alleyways and districts that could take a lifetime to explore fully. Its incredible atmosphere is bound to draw you back again and again.

Tourist attractions

At the top of most visitors’ lists of places to see is the iconic Red Fort. This vivid red sandstone fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (who also built the Taj Mahal) as his palace in 1648. Surrounded by beautifully lush, green gardens, it’s still a magnificent sight today.

Sitting between the Fort and the main gate is Chatta Chowk or the Covered Bazaar, where you can buy a wide selection of souvenirs, trinkets and jewellery. Also make time to visit the Diwan-i-Khas, (Hall of Private Audience). A beautiful building constructed entirely out of marble, it is where the emperor received special visitors.

Humayun's Tomb in south Delhi, near Hazrat Nizamuddin station, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a truly spectacular building. It is surrounded by immaculate gardens in the Persian Char Bagh (four corners) style.

Dating back even further is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Qutub complex in Mehrauli, which dates from the Slave Dynasty of 1206 to 1290. It’s a complex of beautiful buildings including the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and the intricately carved Tomb of Iltutmish.

Travel considerations

Flights to Delhi with Qatar Airways land at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Before you fly to Delhi please check the visa and passport requirements.

Flying from Buenos Aires

Ministro Pistarini International Airport is Argentina’s largest international airport and is located just 22 kilometres southwest of Buenos Aires. The airport was voted "Best airport in the region" by Skytrax in 2007, and its friendly, professional staff go out of their way to make the start of your journey enjoyable and stress-free. Passengers flying from Buenos Aires with Qatar Airways will find this to be an interesting, efficient and modern starting point to their journey.

Transportation and parking

Buses are the most cost-effective way to travel to the airport from all areas of Buenos Aires. The 394 runs to and from Monte Grande railway station and Camino de Cintura, while the 502 serves Ezeiza. A total of eight routes operate between the airport and the Plaza de Mayo in central Buenos Aires. A dedicated shuttle service runs between downtown and the airport, taking approximately one hour to complete the journey. Plenty of taxis are around and can be used, however, if you are using a taxi then ensure it is pre-arranged and the price is agreed before you set off. Parking at the airport is good, with a multi-storey indoor car park next to Terminal B and an open-air car park next to Terminal A.

Arriving at the airport

Passengers flying from Buenos Aires with Qatar Airways depart from Terminal A. Ensure you arrive at the correct terminal, as the site is huge and it can take some time to travel between terminals. As with all international airports, security is very tight so allow at least two hours before your flight is due to board to check in and clear customs checks.

Facilities and amenities

Terminal A is the main international terminal, and provides good facilities for travellers, including a fully equipped business centre that offers full photocopying, fax and Wi-Fi services, as well as relaxation rooms. A bank offering 24-hour services is also available, and there are multiple ATMs throughout the airport. Food and drink is provided at a number of outlets, with both authentic Argentinian and international cuisine on offer, as well as the usual fast food outlets, snacks and beverages. A large retail area sells luxury goods and travel essentials, and the entire airport is wheelchair accessible.
