Tourist attractions

Boston has its own unique style, and your trip to Boston will introduce you to a city that has a distinct personality and character compared to many other  U.S. cities. Open spaces are important to Bostonians, and the ‘Emerald Necklace’ is a series of parks dotted throughout the city that provide a respite from the busy pace of urban life. Boston Common, Franklin Park, and the Boston Public Garden are just a few of the parks located within this series.

Fenway Park is a spot that locals have a particular affection for. Built in 1912, it’s the home of the legendary Boston Red Sox baseball team. If you can’t get in to see a game during your trip to Boston, then definitely take a stadium tour of the grounds and find out why Bostonians are so passionate about the Red Sox.

Boston is also home to several world-class universities. Just across the Charles River in Cambridge you’ll find the world-renowned MIT, along with the iconic Harvard University, founded in 1636. Harvard is America’s oldest college and home to dozens of Nobel Laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners.

You can also check out the John F. Kennedy Museum, the Boston Public Library, and explore the aquatic marvels of the New England Aquarium.

Leisure activities

New England is spectacularly beautiful, especially in the fall season when the surrounding forests and woodlands are ablaze with a kaleidoscope of colour. However, if you’d like to see the city from a completely different perspective, then hop on-board a ‘Duck Boat Tour’, a land and sea excursion in a WWII amphibious vehicle.

To discover the history of the city, take a guided tour of the Freedom Trail, which charts the tumultuous past of a city that was the birthplace of the American Revolution.

In the evening, why not experience the culture of the city with a trip to the Boston Symphony, or the New England Conservatory? Or head down to the Theatre District of Washington Street and Tredmont Street, where many of New York’s Broadway shows are performed before making the move south to the Big Apple.

Eating in Boston

During your trip to Boston, you’ll discover that it offers a rich variety of local produce and  excellent seafood – especially Maine lobsters –from the New England coast. Local specialties include baked beans, cod, and clam chowder. And for dessert, you’ll quickly discover why ‘Beantown’ has such a reputation as an ice-cream lover’s paradise – the sheer variety of flavours on offer is quite astonishing!

There is plenty of international influence in the city, with the North End District, for example,  offering a great selection of Italian restaurants (head for Hanover Street for the best). You can also find exceptionally good eateries in Chinatown, Allston and Coolidge Corner.

Shopping in Boston

You’ll find that the biggest shopping areas in the inner Metro area are the Back Bay and Downtown Crossing.

Newbury Street, often referred to as ‘The Rodeo Drive of the East’, runs the length of the Back Bay neighbourhood, and is full of exclusive shops and boutiques. For something a little more eclectic, head for the neighbouring town of Brookline and Coolidge Corner, and in particular Beacon Street.
