Tourist attractions
Tunis is packed with historical monuments, from the Roman occupation of Carthage through to the beautifully preserved medina that originates from the 8th century. It is here that you’ll find the city’s main souq that, if you step away from the tourist trails (marked ‘touristique’), will immerse you into the local culture in an instant.
The medina is dominated by the magnificent Bab El Bahr or French Gate. If you’re looking for jewellery, head to the Gold quarter at Bab Bnet.
One of Tunis’ main landmarks is the magnificent Zitouna Mosque, which dates back to the 8th century although the unusual square minaret is a 19th century addition.
To get a better understanding of the culture and history of Tunisia, head for the Bardo Museum, which sits on the site of a 13th century palace and is also renowned for a stunning collection of Roman mosaics. For a more intimate experience, visit the Dar Ben Abdallah folk museum.
