Setting yourself up to do business in London

London is geared around commerce, so it’s easy to get your bearings and organise an efficient and enjoyable trip.

  • Roaming charges for mobiles can be expensive, so it’s advisable to buy a UK SIM card to keep costs down. These are available from any phone shop (try the Tottenham Court Road area, which is the electronics epicentre of London).
  • Internet connectivity is exceptionally good in London, with plenty of Wi-Fi hotspots where you can connect for free. Look for the Wi-Fi signal sticker in coffee shop windows. Both download and upload speeds are good, with very few ‘not-spots’.
  • The quickest way to get around is via the underground network, or by hailing one of London’s iconic Black Cabs. Pre-booked cabs via services such as Uber are also available.
  • Central hotels are renowned for their elegance and service standards, but there are plenty of smaller, more homely accommodation providers in and around key transport hubs such as King’s Cross St. Pancras, Liverpool Street, and Victoria.

Business and financial centres in London

The principal financial and commercial district is still the City of London, or the ‘Square Mile’ as it is known, spanning  the area in and around the Bank of England on Threadneedle Street. Many of the world’s leading investment banks can be found along Fenchurch Street, Lombard Street and Cheapside.

Approximately 2.5 miles to the east of the City of London is Canary Wharf. This is London’s ‘Second Square Mile’ and home to some of the world’s largest corporations. It’s also the innovation and technology hub for the city, with hundreds of international companies taking up residence here.

Leisure and relaxation in London

When it comes to relaxing after a long day of work, the city’s many luxury resorts, which feature everything from Japanese-themed spas  to traditional Swedish saunas, provide the perfect escape for some leisure time. Some of London’s most iconic hotels such as the Savoy, The Connaught and the Corinthia Hotel have their own in-house spas.

For golf enthusiasts, the most centrally-located course is on Hampstead Heath to the north of the capital, while the facilities at Urban Golf – Royal Smithfield offer a unique indoor golfing experience in the heart of the city.

The ‘Sport of Kings’ takes place at nearby Ascot and Epsom, or head east to Newmarket in Cambridgeshire, the home of British horse racing.

Culture lovers will be truly spoilt for choice in London. The Covent Garden Opera House is home to some of the world’s best performers, and plenty of world-class theatres in the West End such as the Haymarket feature all kinds of performances from musicals to Shakespeare.

Fine dining and shopping in London

London is home to around 65 Michelin-starred restaurants, with world-class chefs creating exclusive dishes. Pre-booking is advised at the most popular outlets. The key locations for premium-quality restaurants are around the bohemian streets of Soho, affluent Belgravia, and the trendy Shoreditch area.

Shopping is excellent, and a visit to the iconic Harrods in South Kensington is a must. Other premium stores are centred around the W1 postcode, and for hand-made suits head to Savile Row. Jewellery production is focused around Hatton Garden in WC1, while art and sculpture galleries are now taking up residence in the newly-revived East End in Stephney and Hackney.
