One of the city’s most spectacular mosques is the 17th century Mahabat Khan Mosque, built by Governor of Peshawar in 1630 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
Travelling back another thousand years brings visitors to the 7th century hill fort of Bala Hisar, which was believed to have been built originally as a royal residence.
