Once the home of royalty, today Peshawar still embraces its past but is most definitely looking towards a more prosperous and culturally diverse future.
The old city centre is packed with landmarks, markets and mosques, including the Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Bazar-e-Kalan, the Clock Tower Square (a great geographical marker if you get lost in the winding alleys and streets), Chowk Yadgar, Tehsil Gorgathri, Mohabbat Khan Mosque, Sunehri Masjid (Sadar), Peshawar Museum, and the Khyber Bazaar.
The clock tower was presented by Queen Victoria during the British colonisation of Pakistan, and still stands today as a monument to that period. You can also still see a strong colonial influence in many of the older buildings.
One of the city’s most spectacular mosques is the 17th century Mahabat Khan Mosque, built by Governor of Peshawar in 1630 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
Travelling back another thousand years brings visitors to the 7th century hill fort of Bala Hisar, which was believed to have been built originally as a royal residence.
The region is well known for its precious gems, and a trip to Shah Qabool Gems Street is the perfect opportunity to see and buy some of these stones as a memento of your trip to Peshawar.
