Arriving in Sharjah
Sharjah is the third largest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, and a prosperous, rapidly expanding economy that’s focused on finance and commerce. It’s also fiercely independent with a more relaxed and laid-back feel, as well as a distinctly ‘low level’ skyline that has far fewer skyscrapers than its neighbours. Surrounded by spectacular mountains, it’s also a geographically beautiful country with a wide range of environments for travellers to explore.
Book a flight to Sharjah with Qatar Airways and you’ll find a unique and distinctive country with its own personality and character. A big ex-pat community gives it a more cosmopolitan feel when compared to the other Emirates, and Sharjah is a popular destination for business travellers.
A good way of learning more about the culture of Sharjah is to pay a visit to the Heritage Area, near the Corniche between Burj Avenue & Al-Maraija Road. Historic buildings have been reconstructed using traditional materials to give it an authentic feel. The most interesting sites are Al Hisn Fort, Literature Square with the House of Poetry, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, the Sharjah Heritage Museum and the Souq al-Arsa. This is a great way to pack in a lot of attractions into a single visit.
The Al Hisn Fort, on Al-Hosn Avenue, dominates the Heritage Area, and has been beautifully restored and preserved, with its own museum and exhibits. The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is a unique and genuinely stunning museum that is home to some of the rarest, handwritten Qur'ans in the world, as well as letters from the Prophet Mohammed to other leaders and various artefacts from Mecca, making it an inspirational as well as a fascinating place to visit.
Sharjah is known for its art, and the best place to see some of the finest examples is the Arts Area (opposite the Heritage Area) and home to the Sharjah Art Museum. If you want to travel a little out of the city then the Sharjah Desert Park is just 28km from the centre and home to the Natural History Museum, the Arabian Wildlife Centre and the Children’s Farm.
Flights to Sharjah with Qatar Airways land at Sharjah International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure.
