QATAR AIRWAYS WELCOMES TENNIS STARS TO DOHA FOR ANNUAL EXXONMOBIL TOURNAMENT

Doha, QATAR - As the Official Airline, Qatar Airways is bringing in another eventful season of tennis to Doha with the world’s leading players competing in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2014 tournament taking place from 30 December to 4 January 2014.

Widely acclaimed as Qatar’s most prestigious Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event, World No.1 player Rafael Nadal, World No.3 David Ferrer and World No.4 Andy Murray will take centre stage and battle it out on the courts of the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex in Doha.

Nadal will be returning to Doha after a 2013 season that saw him win 10 titles, including an eighth French Open and a second US Open. This is Nadal’s sixth appearance in the Qatari capital with his best result being a finals appearance in 2010.

Spain’s David Ferrer had an outstanding 2013 season winning two titles (Buenos Aires and Auckland) and reaching seven other finals, including the ATP Masters in Paris and Miami.

Andy Murray makes a return to Doha where he is a two-time champion, having won in 2008 and 2009. Since then, he has won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, the 2012 US Open title and 2013 Wimbledon, becoming the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.

A statement from the airline said: “Qatar Airways has a proud tradition of hosting the biggest sporting events in Doha and we are very excited to be bringing these world-class players to our home country for another season of superlative tennis.”

“The acclaimed tournament is watched by tennis fans around the globe and will raise great suspense for this edition of the championship.”

To celebrate this great event, Qatar Airways is launching a contest at http://www.qatarairways.com/global/en/offers/tennis.page to provide tennis enthusiasts around the world with an opportunity to win a pair of VIP tickets to attend both the semi-final and the finals matches in Doha, Qatar.

The lucky winner will also earn a three night stay at the award-winning Oryx Rotana Hotel. Additionally, if the winner is in Qatar, they will receive 100,000 Privilege Club Avios and if outside of Qatar, will receive a Business Class flight to Doha to attend the match.

Qatar Airways has seen rapid growth in just 16 years of operations, currently flying a modern fleet of 128 aircraft to 134 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and The Americas.

Over the next few weeks and months, the network will grow further with Sharjah and Dubai World Central, both in the UAE (March 1, 2014), Larnaca, Cyprus (April 29), Philadelphia, USA (April 2, 2014), Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Turkey (May 22, 2014), Edinburgh, Scotland (May 28, 2014), Miami, USA (June 10, 2014) and Dallas/Fort Worth, USA (July 1, 2014).

Notes to Editors:

On October 30, 2013, Qatar Airways joined the oneworld Alliance, becoming the only major Gulf carrier to join a global airline alliance, enabling its customers to benefit from almost a thousand airports in more than 150 countries, with 14,000 daily departures.

Award-winning carrier Qatar Airways was presented with three honours at the annual Skytrax 2013 World Airline Awards held during the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget, France last June. The airline was awarded World’s Best Business Class, World’s Best Business Class Lounge and, for the second consecutive year, Best Airline Staff Service in the Middle East.

During the 2013 Dubai Air Show the airline placed orders for more than 60 new aircraft – a mixture of Boeing 777X and Airbus A330 Freighters. In total the airline has more than 280 aircraft on order worth more than US $50 billion. The airline will move into its new hub and home, Hamad International Airport from early 2014.
