Our commitment to the environment

As one of the world’s leading airlines, Qatar Airways flies to more than 160 destinations operating one of the youngest fleets in the sky. More than 200 new aircraft are on order to ensure that Qatar Airways continues to operate a fuel-efficient fleet. This investment underpins our commitment to the environment and ensures a first-class travel experience for our customers.

As a member of oneworld, Qatar Airways works with partner airlines to achieve even more efficient air travel. This includes supporting Air Traffic Control authorities to move towards more efficient airspace management and collaborating to enable passengers to use e-tickets throughout their global journey to reduce the printing of paper tickets.

Environmental management

Logo of IEnvA.

Our environmental management system is certified to the highest level of  IATA’s Environmental Assessment programme (IEnvA)

The certification covers passenger and cargo airline operations, flight operations, catering and cabin services, aircraft maintenance and repair, cargo ground services, and all corporate functions.

Continual improvement in our environmental performance is delivered by:

  •  Embedding our environmental policy, standards and procedures throughout business operations
  • Setting and measuring progress towards environmental objectives and targets
  • Committing visible environmental leadership and training all employees to drive and maintain progress towards our environmental ambition

Climate change

Aviation will make a significant contribution to the global response to climate change, and we are contributing towards the development of local and international solutions.

Qatar Airways is collaborating with industry associations IATA and AACO and SAFUG on the development of a global policy for managing aviation’s greenhouse gas emissions and is fully compliant with regional schemes such as the European Union Emission Trading Scheme.

Qatar Airways is enhancing the efficiency of air travel through our fuel optimisation programme.  This involves testing and implementing new ways to save fuel and reduce carbon emissions such as:

  • Identifying opportunities to reduce aircraft weight and fuel consumption
  • Optimising efficiency of flight routes
  • Reviewing the use of energy while taxiing to and from the runway.

IATA Carbon Offset Program

Qatar Airways is a proud member of the IATA carbon offset program. The carbon offset program allows our passengers to voluntarily offset the carbon emissions associated with their journey on Qatar Airways operated flights at the point of booking. Contributions are invested in the India Wind Farm project.

Over the next quarter of a century, India is set to make the largest contribution of any country to increased global energy demand. A growing middle class, 600 million new electricity consumers, 315 million more people living in cities, and a rapidly expanding manufacturing sector, mean India’s energy infrastructure will require $140 billion of investment every year until 2040.  A large proportion of this increased energy demand will be met by coal, and India is likely to be not only the world’s second largest coal producer, but also the world’s largest coal importer. As well as increasing India’s contribution to climate change, more coal power plants will create local air quality issues that are likely to be harmful to human health.

Qatar Airways is supporting the Fatanpur Wind Farm project, which invests in developing India’s renewable energy capacity. The project currently supports 54 turbines across two districts in Madhya Pradesh: Dewas and Ujjain.  With a combined power rating of over 108 Mega Watts, these turbines displace over 210,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from the Indian Electricity Grid each year.

Preventing Illegal Wildlife Transportation

Qatar Airways has a zero tolerance policy to the illegal transportation of endangered wildlife. Wildlife trafficking is the world’s 4th largest illegal trade, estimated to be worth $19 billion per year.  The trade in endangered species of animals and plants, fuelled by demand for jewellery, decorations and unproven medical treatments, is needless and has tragic consequences for global conservation.

International aviation can be targeted by traffickers to unknowingly transport endangered wildlife.  In response to this global threat, Qatar Airways is committed to:

  • Raising awareness
  • Improving detection
  • Sharing intelligence and best practice with the industry

Qatar Airways is proud to be an inaugural signatory to the United for Wildlife Transport Industry Declaration and a partner in the USAID Reducing Opportunities for Unlawful Transport of Endangered Species (ROUTES) Partnership.

In May 2019, Qatar Airways became the first airline to be certified under the Illegal Wildlife Trade Assessment, developed by IATA with support from The Royal Foundation and the ROUTES Partnership. This certification demonstrates Qatar Airways’ commitments to the United for Wildlife Transport Industry Declaration.

Sustainability reporting

At Qatar Airways Group, we believe in our responsibility to care for the environment.  We are committed to demonstrating environmental leadership through our global airline and airport operations, aviation and catering services, retail outlets and hotels. We openly communicate our environmental performance to develop the trust on which long-term environmental leadership is built.

Each year we prepare a Sustainability Report to provide information on the environmental issues that are most important to us and to our stakeholders.  The reports set out the progress we are making towards our environmental objectives and present examples of what we are doing to continually improve our environmental performance.
