It’s difficult not to get overwhelmed by Phuket’s natural splendour. One of Thailand’s most popular islands, it is often featured in holiday brochures designed to lure travellers looking for an exotic, picture-perfect destination.
On Phuket, expansive beaches, with powdery white sand, are complemented by crystal-clear turquoise waters. Elsewhere on the island are impressive waterfalls and lush jungles to explore.

Tourist attractions
The island’s capital, Phuket Town, is the place to go to for delving deeper into the culture and history of the province. There you’ll find 19th-century mansions, Chinese and Thai temples, and the Phuket Culture Centre, which houses a rich collection of folk arts. If you want to take a panoramic shot of the town, climb the 500-metre Khao Rang Hill.
However, many of Phuket’s main attractions lie outside the town. Trekking through the island’s jungles is particularly popular, as is lounging around on its many beaches.
For a unique wildlife experience, head to the government-certified Siam Safari Nature Tours, which offers elephant-trekking expeditions. For beach adventures, Patong, Kata and Karon are the common first stops on a trip to Phuket, but there are many quieter stretches of sand to discover. -
Leisure activities
Where there are beaches, there are inevitably water sports. Scuba-diving or snorkelling in the warm, clear waters around the island are must-dos for any trip to Phuket.
There is also a thriving free-diving scene (diving without breathing apparatus), but this should only be attempted by those who are strong swimmers and confident in the water – and even then, with extreme caution. Other water sports include jet-skiing, yachting, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
For a more relaxing experience during your trip to Phuket, book yourself in for a treatment at one of the island’s many spas. -
Food
In Phuket, you can sample all aspects of Thailand’s legendary cuisine. As with other parts of the country, street food is an affordable and tasty treat that can be indulged in at virtually any time of day. In the island’s air-conditioned restaurants, you’ll find everything from Thai classics to spicy local cuisine, including noodle soup, pad Thai, and rich green, yellow and red Thai curries flavoured with coconut milk.
Seafood is in particular abundance, due to Phuket’s proximity to the Andaman Sea. Local specialities worth sampling are nam phrik kung siap, a dish of smoked shrimp, chillies and vegetables. -
Shopping
Whether you’re looking for busy local markets or modernised mall shopping, you’ll find it when you travel to Phuket. Souvenirs can be purchased around many of the major beach areas, while more extensive shopping can be done at the large malls of Phuket Town and Patong.
