Travel from Sydney to Cairns by car in 14 days

Embark on a road trip across Australia to discover the beautiful countryside, friendly small towns, and must-see sights in between. Take your time winding your way through the vast, diverse terrain and immerse yourself in the country’s true spirit.

If you’ve already done the Sydney to Melbourne drive, prepare for a different experience on the route from Sydney to Cairns – where you’ll traverse the dramatic Pacific coastline and a few inland locations. Stop at Byron Bay, the Gold Coast and the Whitsundays to admire the changing scenery and varied culture of this unique destination. Get your travel plans started with this 14-day Australia itinerary.

Days 1 and 2: Sydney to Newcastle

Start your road trip in Sydney, a vibrant metropolis blending laid-back charm and urban energy. From the remarkable Sydney Opera House and the iconic Harbour Bridge to the legendary surfer hangout of Bondi Beach, its main attractions encapsulate modern Australia.

After exploring the city, take a two-hour drive along the coast to reach Newcastle, famous for its beaches as well as its thriving arts and café scene. It’s also known for natural wonders such as Bogey Hole and the Glenrock State Conservation Area.

Day 3: Newcastle to Nambucca Heads

Set off on a three-to-four hour drive from Newcastle to Nambucca Heads via Port Macquarie. Visit the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, where you can observe one of Australia’s most recognisable native animals. You can also enjoy some spectacular vistas on a walk from the town to the Tacking Point Lighthouse.

Once you arrive in Nambucca Heads in the evening, stroll along the V‑Wall for some truly memorable sunset views. If you’re lucky, you may even spot whales and dolphins playing in the waters below.

Day 4: Nambucca to Coffs Harbour

Australia is famous for roadside attractions dotted along the countryside. An hour away from Nambucca is Coffs Harbour, home to the Big Banana and a great stop for families with fun theme park entertainment.

You might have the chance to go whale watching from the nearby coast, and kayaking through Boambee Creek. Wander along a break wall to Muttonbird Island, the most popular destination in Coffs Harbour. You’ll find rare birds and frequently ocean wildlife such as turtles, stingrays and dolphins.

Days 5 and 6: Coffs to Byron Bay

A two-and-a-half-hour drive brings you to Byron Bay, a relaxed, bohemian spot with beach-front cafés and surf schools. Spend a day roaming around the inland attractions too. Make your way to Minyon Falls, a 100m-high waterfall in the heart of the Nightcap National Park, before heading over to the Byron Hinterland, full of farms growing bananas.

Back at the beach, nothing quite beats sunset at the Cape Byron Lighthouse, followed by a delicious meal of fresh seafood at one of the town’s many restaurants.

Day 7: Byron to Brisbane

This part of your Australia itinerary takes you along the famous Gold Coast, with its breath-taking scenery, sweeping sands and dramatic cliffs. Stop at Burleigh Heads or Snapper Rocks, both boasting acclaimed surfing beaches.

After riding the waves or sunbathing in the sand, continue to Brisbane, a bustling city and the capital of Queensland. Shop in the Queen Street Mall or marvel at the city from above on a hot air balloon ride.

Days 8 and 9: Brisbane to Noosa

It’s time to move on to Noosa, the heart of the Sunshine Coast and home to Australia Zoo – made famous by the late Steve ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Irwin. Visit the Noosa National Park and venture along the coastal track to see the dolphins and turtles.

Go kayaking through the ancient Noosa Everglades, one of only two everglades systems on the planet and stretching across two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves: the Noosa and Great Sandy. Unwind in the evening by dining at the elegant restaurants and quaint cafés of Noosa town.

Day 10: Noosa to Hervey Bay

Your next drive is two hours-long and brings you to Hervey Bay, where you can meet Australia’s indigenous people. It’s the gateway to K’gari, the largest sand island on earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover K'gari through 4WD beach drives, hiking, camping and scenic flights. Popular attractions include 75 Mile Beach, the Maheno Shipwreck, Eli Creek, Coloured Sands, Champagne Pools and The Pinnacles. Don’t miss the impressive Lake McKenzie, or the expansive rainforests that surround the area.

Day 11: Hervey Bay to Yeppoon

Following an action-packed day at Hervey Bay, bask in the tranquil atmosphere of Yeppoon. Take a four-and-a-half-hour drive to access Great Keppel Island, a picturesque spot with a name derived from the language of the Darumbal indigenous people.

Feel the sand between your toes on quiet beaches, learn to surf at one of the local schools, or stop by local wildlife sanctuaries filled with majestic fauna. For unforgettable views, meander along Bluff Point to catch the sunset or a climb up Fan Rock Lookout.

Days 12 and 13: Yeppoon to Airlie

After a drive of about five hours, you’ll arrive in Airlie – the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. Scuba diving in its turquoise waters is a thrilling bucket-list experience, but you can also opt for a helicopter ride for an aerial view of this stunning natural phenomenon.

Back on dry land, take a detour to Conway National Park to explore tropical rainforests and waterfalls. To delight your palate, indulge in a picnic or dine at exclusive restaurants lining the palm-fringed beaches.

Day 14: Airlie to Cairns

The longest drive of the itinerary brings you to the end of your journey in the city of Cairns. En route, you can break up your trip with a stop in Townsville, Magnetic Island or Mission Beach. Cairns combines a lush, green environment with a cosmopolitan city culture, complete with al fresco dining, shopping and entertainment.

Admire the rainforest with a ride on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, and glide over the ancient canopy as you return on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.
