Food in Abha

This mountainous region boasts a distinctive cuisine, focused around hearty stews and soups flavoured with a variety of herbs and spices. Local crops like wheat and barley play a significant role in those chunky stews and casseroles. A few dishes to try while you’re here include “mutabbaq”, a savoury pancake packed with cheese, onions and meat, as well as “harees”, a porridge-like stew made from wheat and chicken, served with flatbread and vegetables.

There are plenty of sweet dishes to tuck into, often incorporating dates and honey, seasoned with cardamom. Try “al haysa” for a delicious way to end a meal. You may also encounter Bedouin-influenced dishes too, such as “mansaf” – a dish made with rice, lamb and a tangy fermented yoghurt sauce known as “jameed”.
