Flying from Jeddah
Opened in 1981, the King Abdulaziz International Airport welcomes not only travellers from around the world, but pilgrims on the Hajj to Mecca too. Its huge complex covers over 100 square kilometres, and is one of the biggest air transport hubs in the Middle East.
Transportation and parking
Because of the sheer size of the airport and the distance between the north and south terminals, taxis provide the main means of transportation in and around the airport.
During the Hajj period, the volume of passengers increases significantly, so if you are flying from Jeddah with Qatar Airways during this period it is probably best to book a taxi or limousine in advance. Regular buses from the city and other locations run regularly to the airport. There is ample parking available close to the North Terminal.
Arriving at King Abdulaziz International Airport
There are two main passenger terminals, as well as the iconic, tented structure of the Hajj Terminal, which is reserved exclusively for pilgrims on the Hajj.
Flights from Jeddah with Qatar Airways leave from the North Terminal (along with most other international flights). Be aware that the two terminals are nearly 8 kilometres apart, and the only way to get from one to the other is by airport taxi.
Facilities and amenities
As King Abdulaziz International Airport is in the middle of an extensive development program, current facilities may be a little limited.
However, the new developments will bring in everything from a purpose-built food hall and mall with exclusive brand shopping available, as well as a large mosque, lounges and wellness areas for passengers.
