Arriving in Alexandria
Egypt’s second most popular destination after the capital of Cairo, Alexandria is the country’s key port and the gateway to the Mediterranean. Once the home of the Alexandria Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, today it’s a cosmopolitan city, bustling port and vibrant home to 3.5million people.
Alexandria still has plenty to offer tourists looking for that authentic Egyptian experience, with ancient monuments and fascinating museums charting its history as a centre for culture and learning. Book a flight to Alexandria with Qatar Airways and discover more about this culturally rich location.
Tourist attractions
While the mighty lighthouse and its legendary library may have long since gone, there are plenty of historic sites to keep visitors interested. The huge Citadel of Qaitbay is located on the spot once occupied by the lighthouse, and overlooks the harbour.
The catacombs of Kom el-Shouqafa, at Karmouz, is a stunning series of tombs filled with statues and carvings that are a fusion of Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultural references, echoing the cosmopolitan nature of the city itself.
Pompey's Pillar, also in Karmouz, is a 25metre-high granite column erected in AD297, while the Roman theatre at Kom El-Dikka was also constructed at around the same time.
If you want to get out of the heat of the midday sun but still feel the need to soak up some cultural references, then Alexandria’s museums are particularly good, especially the Alexandria National Museum. For a moment of quiet contemplation and solitude, head to the beautiful 18th century El-Mursi Abul-Abbas Mosque.
