Plan ahead

One of the best ways to manage costs is to start planning early. Keeping your eyes peeled for the latest deals, discounts, and promotions can reduce the price of both flights and hotels. This will also give you more time to research your destination, speak to friends and family who have travelled there before, and find out the best cheap eats, free tours, and exciting experiences on offer.

Fight Jetlag

When you land, you’ll want to be able to get going straight away, and you’ll enjoy your flight more if you know you’ll feel refreshed at the end of it. One way, used by our cabin crew, is helping to trick yourself into adjusting to your new time zone. Adjust your watch to the destination time as soon as you board, and tell yourself that you’re in that time zone already. 

Pack well

On a long flight, a smartphone or tablet can provide your favourite movies and music, but looking at bright screens for long periods can cause eyestrain. Try bringing an e-reader, such as a Kindle or a Nook. While you can use these to browse the web or read the papers, in our experience there’s nothing like reading a novel set in your destination to whet your appetite for your trip.

Audiobooks and podcasts

If you prefer non-fiction, or find reading difficult while travelling, audiobooks and podcasts are an excellent alternative to keep your mind engaged.  

You can buy individual audiobooks without a subscription on the app stores, saving you another direct debit. Podcasts are great for staying informed and entertained; with thousands of high-quality episodes available on topics including true crime, comedy, and current affairs. Many leading universities allow you to get full lectures in podcast form – and so get a head start on next term’s modules.
