Things to do in Phnom Penh

To learn more about the country, visit the National Museum of Cambodia to gain a deeper understanding of its history, culture and people. The Royal Palace is also a key stop on your Cambodia itinerary, with two pagodas to see – the Silver Pagoda and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Take a sunset cruise at the Tonlé Sap for a different perspective of the city. Then stop at one of Cambodia’s night markets for a unique shopping experience. One of the best is located at the northern end of the docks at Sisowath Quay.

For an interesting mix of Asian and European culture, a visit to the French Quarter is a chance to see grand buildings alongside the white chedi of Wat Phnom. To enjoy an Art Deco-inspired shopping experience, stroll around Phsar Thmei market, close to the modern Sorya Shopping Centre.

A Mekong cruise takes you along the river and lets you watch the sun set on the horizon behind the Royal Palace. If you prefer, it’s also possible to hire your own boat with a local captain so you can explore a little further.

For something unique, cooking schools offer lessons where you can learn about local ingredients and create your own Cambodian dishes.

To find out more about the wildlife of Cambodia, take an interactive tour at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, where elephants and some of Cambodia’s last surviving tigers are rehabilitated. Interactions are closely monitored to ensure the animal’s welfare is never compromised.

Phnom Penh’s art scene is thriving, and Meta House offers exhibitions, events, and lectures about the history of art and culture in Cambodia. It’s your chance to see the country’s up-and-coming artists’ work.

Phnom Penh’s cuisine is an exciting combination of traditional dishes and influences from around the world, including French, Portuguese, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese. To try some of the more exotic flavours, a stroll along the Riverfront introduces you to Cambodian street food as well as fine dining experiences. Noodles such as num banh chok are particularly popular, as are fruit and vegetarian dishes. Fish is also a fantastic option. Try amok trey, a spicy steamed fish curry.

If you really want to challenge your palate, you’ll find vendors along the Riverfront and Sisowath Quay selling fried insects, which are a common part of Cambodian street food.

For a relaxed dining experience, Boeng Keng Kang has plenty of cafés and restaurants to explore.

As a shopping destination, Phnom Penh offers a huge selection of malls and markets. Central Market is a Cambodian landmark with its striking golden dome which houses jewellery stores, electronics, paintings and crafts.

A quirky place to shop is the Russian Market, where you can explore and buy local batik scarves and handicrafts, jewellery and clothes.

If you prefer shopping in an air-conditioned atmosphere, there are three Aeon Malls – family-friendly destinations with children’s entertainment and food halls selling a wide selection of cuisine.

For something unique, tucked away behind the Royal Palace is Street 240 – a destination lined with artisan stores. When the sun goes down, Phnom Penh’s night markets are a wonderfully relaxed shopping experience. Enjoy the night breeze as you browse.
