Medina highlights

Take a stroll around a modern city before delving into the relics of antiquity, in Saudi Arabia’s beloved Medina.

  • Tourist attractions

When you travel to Madinah, a good starting point is the Al-Masjid an-Nabawi Mosque, the world’s third-oldest mosque. While it normally holds 600,000, this capacity is enhanced during the Hajj period to 1 million. The structure is a stunning mix of architectural styles, including Islamic, contemporary, classical and Ottoman.

In the south-east corner of Al-Masjid al-Nabawi, lies the Green Dome.

On the outskirts of the city you will find the Quba Mosque, the world’s second-oldest, built in the same year as Al-Masjid al-Nabawi. Also worth visiting is the Masjid al-Qiblatayn, or the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, built in 623.

  • Leisure activities

Madinah is also home to several green spaces, including King Fahd Garden, a beautifully sculpted public park with impressive floral arrangements, convenient barbeque huts, and shops selling historic souvenirs.

For some family entertainment, head for Al Noor Mall’s Sparky’s entertainment centre, which has fun for all ages. Its central attraction is a 5D cinema that turns movies into interactive experiences. Sparky’s also has an amusement centre, with rides, arcade games, an indoor ice-skating rink and a sizeable soft play area for younger visitors.

  • Food

Madinah’s culinary options are many and varied. Japanese, Italian, American, Indian, Middle Eastern and Chinese dishes are all on offer.

The city has a long history of date trading and its date groves remain an integral part of its commercial relationship with surrounding regions. Madinah offers more than 120 varieties of date, with ajwa being among the most popular. Be sure to sample some local desserts, which tend to rely heavily on dates.

Falafel (deep-fried, seasoned, mashed chickpea fritters in pitta bread), ful (cooked fava beans) and tameez (flatbread) are other local favourites to try.

  • Shopping

Madinah offers retail experiences stretching from old-world to modern-day – malls offering international brands are seen alongside atmospheric souqs.

Al Noor Mall, found in the city’s residential district, houses a blend of global stores, coffee shops, restaurants and family entertainment. Also try the Al Rashid Mega Mall, Madinah’s largest, which combines international brand stores with stunning and quirky interior design. One feature is a huge galleon afloat on an indoor artificial cove. A gangplank even allows mall visitors to board the vessel.

But for the authentic buzz of ancient Arab commerce, visit the Old Bazaar, where you can find everything you need for souvenir shopping. Perfumes, foodstuffs, jewellery, clothing and curios are all sold here, and the surrounding stone walls and arches add some Arabian ambiance.
