Hail: The jewel of the Arabian Desert
Book your visit to Hail
Nestled in the heart of the Arabian Desert between the twin mountain ranges of Aja and Salma, Hail is a treasure that’s well worth seeking out. Surrounded by dramatic dunes and a wild, majestic expanse, this historic site played a vital role in trade along the caravan and Hajj route. It is also the birthplace of Hatim Al Tai – a famous poet and nobleman – and was renowned as a centre for learning and culture.
Today, its remarkable mud-brick heritage buildings, gorgeous oases and lush date plantations make it a tempting destination for visitors who want to step off the usual tourist trails and experience a proud and authentic Saudi city. This ‘Key to the Desert’ lives up to its name and will surpass your expectations with its warmth and fascinating culture.
Things to do in Hail
Any visit to Hail should include a trip to the magnificent Al Qishla Palace. Built in the 1940s by King Abdul Aziz, it’s an ode to the architectural brilliance of the ornamental Najdi style.
Head to A’arif Fort, an imposing structure from the 17th century that will reward you with a glimpse into the region’s past and sweeping panoramic views of the entire desert city.
Part of the Jubbah UNESCO World Heritage Site includes the astonishing 10,000-year-old cliff-face pictographs. These incredible drawings trace back to the earliest human presence in Arabia, when the desert bloomed and huge oryx roamed freely – standing as witnesses to the area’s undeniable legacy.
Stroll around AlAziziyah farm and discover a place where the grass is indeed greener. Spanning over eight million square meters, its olive groves and citrus orchards call you in for a peaceful picnic. After reconnecting with the earth, take to the air at the aviation club or trot along a camel ride.

Hail is known for its culinary scene, blending traditional and modern flavours with panache. As an important trading hub for thousands of years, its cuisine has absorbed a wide variety of spices and influences you don’t find in other parts of the country. A staple is Hail Harees – a time-honoured dish prepared from boiled wheat grains with meat, onions and tomatoes.
Tuck into some Keubaibat – the region’s signature dish made with vine leaves stuffed with meat, vegetables and rice and served with a tomato-based sauce. For your sweet tooth, try some Hanaini dough made from dates, ghee and white bread filling – delicious way to end a meal or give yourself a calorie boost before tackling a mountain trail.

Wander away from the main souq and you’ll also find stalls along the streets and alleyways surrounding the main square.
