Things to do in Kigali

One of the grandest buildings in Kigali is the Presidential Palace, now a museum and gallery showcasing the intricate history of the country. Take a guided tour and learn why Rwanda has become one of the most forward-thinking of all the African countries.

To understand the importance of art in Rwandan culture, a visit to the Inema Arts Center is a must. As well as visual art, you’ll be able to join in art-inspired yoga classes or take in a concert of African music.

If you fancy a little pampering while you’re here, Kigali has plenty of health spas offering relaxing saunas and top-to-toe massages. If you’re a passionate golfer, Kigali Golf Club provides plenty of challenges, while football fans can experience the incredible energy of an African match at the Amahoro stadium.

Activities in Kigali

You have to climb at least one of Rwanda’s ‘Thousand Hills’ while you’re here, and Mount Kigali is well worth the effort, with panoramic views of the city and the countryside.

If you want to explore Mount Kigali at a more relaxed pace, a horse ride puts you right in the heart of the incredible scenery. Available for both beginner and experienced riders, you can also discover the delights of Rugende Park by horseback.

For a peaceful afternoon outside the city, fishermen can try and hook a catch at Lake Muhazi. The large lake and surrounding park are also an excellent spot for wildlife and birdwatching.

Get some family time in: settle down with a blockbuster movie at one of the city’s multiplexes.

Food in Kigali

If you want to eat like a local in Kigali, tuck into brochette, a shish kebab made with meat or fish with a unique blend of herbs and spices. A hearty meal with plenty of taste packed in is nyama choma, a Rwandan variation of barbequed meat served with a spicy tomato, onion and chilli salad.

Tilapia is the most common fish used in African cuisine. Try some ‘big fish’ (tilapia grilled and served with vegetables) in the Nyamirambo area.

While there are plenty of modern coffee bars in the city, the locals head to the nearest milk bar for a glass of fresh or fermented milk known as ikivuguto, along with a plate of snacks.

High-end dining is also available. The city centre has some excellent restaurants serving international cuisine.

Shopping in Kigali

Crafts and textiles are Rwandan specialities. The best place to shop for these brightly coloured handicrafts is Kimironko Market – one of the city’s liveliest and most endearing retail experiences.

Support the local social enterprises by shopping for souvenirs at the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. Or pick up some bespoke work from local artists at the Inema Arts Center.

For a truly authentic African market shopping experience, the Nyabugogo Marche Market is the real deal. Expect big crowds, lots of noise, and lots of haggling.

The city centre is where you’ll find modern, air-conditioned malls and department stores, but walk around any corner and you’ll stumble cross yet another market. Things to look out for include Rwandan coffee and the local honey, which is absolutely delicious.
