Perth highlights

Investigate the 45,000-year history of the Noongar in the Western Australian Museum before heading to the beach, or one of Perth’s many secluded islands.

  • Tourist attractions

Though the area has been inhabited for many thousands of years, modern Perth began as a British settlement in the early 19th century. You will find many of the city’s historic attractions in its Central Business District during your trip to Perth, including Australia’s oldest mint, The Perth Mint, which is still in operation.

Other cultural centres include the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Western Australian Museum. Archaeological evidence suggests the Noongar people have lived in the region for at least 45,000 years, and much of their history and artefacts can be seen in the museum.

Perth Town Hall, on Barrack Street, was built by exiled convicts around 150 years ago. But to trace the history of Perth to its origins, visit the restored Old Mill, first built in 1835 on the banks of the Swan River.

Other Perth highlights include visits to the expansive Kings Park and Botanic Gardens, the Swan Bell Tower located on the banks of the Swan River, and Perth Zoo. The city’s beaches, such as Cottlesloe and Scarborough, are also popular. Rottnest Island is also filled with sandy spots, as well as being home to the quokka, a cuddly, furry, rodent-like creature indigenous to Western Australia.

  • Leisure activities

Perth has an abundance of sun-kissed beaches, offering plenty of opportunities for lazing, swimming and water-sports.

For the more action-prone traveller, cycling the city’s bike paths is highly recommended, and is a great way to see more of the city. Residents and visitors spend many an hour in Perth’s botanic gardens and public green areas, which include Lake Monger and Bold Park.

For a day trip from Perth, visit John Forrest National Park, Western Australia’s oldest. It is home to a variety of plant communities, two waterfalls and wildlife that includes the national icon: kangaroos.

  • Food

Perth has plenty of high-quality restaurants where you can indulge in local and international cuisine, whatever your budget. Locally caught seafood and fresh regional produce can be found in the port city of Fremantle.

Just 40 minutes from Perth, Mundaring is another popular tourist attraction. The area is filled with locally owned cafés, restaurants and art galleries. It is also home to the Mundaring Weir Dam. You can walk or cycle along the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail, both of which offer many ideal spots for barbeques and picnics.

  • Shopping

Travel to Perth and you will find many outlets selling Aboriginal crafts (try the Aboriginal Art & Craft Gallery), including didgeridoos. But for designer fashion stores, head for King Street.

The Hay Street Mall is home to many national and international retailers. Perth’s outlet stores can be found in Harbour Town, in West Perth. Access to this mall is free along the local CAT (Central Area Transit) bus network. Look for the black cat logo on the buses.
