Doha, QATAR – Qatar Airways and Qatar-based charity organisation Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) today signed a sponsorship agreement which named the award-winning Five Star carrier as the “Official Airline of the ROTA Gala Dinner”.
The ROTA dinner is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, and Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned.
The sponsorship follows a long tradition at Qatar Airways in supporting Reach Out to Asia’s charitable activities and will ensure that many of the invited celebrities and dignitaries fly with Qatar’s national airline. Since the first ROTA gala dinner was held in Doha in 2005, the carrier has sponsored each of the dazzling events organised for a good cause.
More than 400 international guests are expected to attend the red-carpet charity event, being held for the first time at Doha’s iconic landmark, the Museum of Islamic Art, on October 31.
Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker signed the sponsorship agreement with Qatar Foundation Board Member and Vice-President Administration, Rashid Al Naimi at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Doha today.
The ROTA dinner aims to raise funds through an auction conducted by the renowned British auction house Sotheby’s. The proceeds of auctioned items, including jewellery from Cartier, a luxury car and many other unique collectibles, will be used to help the underprivileged and disadvantaged across the Asian continent, including the Middle East through projects set up by ROTA.
Al Baker said: “Qatar Airways is once again delighted to support worthy causes initiated by Reach Out To Asia, the Qatar-based charity organisation, which shares our strong view in taking social responsibility seriously.
“Over the years, staff at Qatar Airways have been engaged in many charitable events and the latest demonstrates our commitment to society at large.”
As signatory to the sponsorship agreement, ROTA board member Mr. Rashid Al Naimi said: “It is indeed a pleasure for ROTA to continue its tradition of partnership with Qatar Airways. Today’s sponsorship agreement, with Qatar Airways the official airline of our 3rd ROTA Gala Dinner, stands as a testament to our unique and continuous relationship.
“ROTA is dedicated to providing access to both, primary and secondary education and to reach out to thousands of youths across Asia including the Middle East. This year’s Gala Dinner will fly in many a celebrity and ROTA is delighted that they will enjoy our national carrier’s world renowned hospitality.
The last ROTA Gala Dinner in 2006 raised an impressive US$11.25 million for charitable causes, and organisers are hoping to surpass the figure at this year’s event – the third in ROTA’s short history.
The sponsorship package provides Qatar Airways with the opportunity to present its high level credentials at the star-studded evening, which promises to be one of the most talked-about events in Qatar’s social calendar this year.
Qatar Airways joined forces with Qatar Foundation and its Reach Out To Asia initiative for the first time in 2005 and, since then, the sponsoring of ROTA’s Gala Dinner has become a fixture in the airline’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme (CSR).
As part of its CSR policy, the airline has a strong record in supporting humanitarian initiatives and is involved in a number of international community projects in developing nations. Having sent aid to victims of the 2006 tsunami that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in south-east Asia, Qatar Airways has also delivered humanitarian aid to Darfur in Sudan, as well as help re-build schools in China following the devastating earthquake in Sichuan province two years ago.
The airline’s website features a dedicated section to its CSR initiatives, accessible through the following link www.qatarairways.com/csr.
