Doha, QATAR – Qatar Duty Free, a subsidiary of Qatar Airways, has announced the winner of its latest US$1 millionaire draw, creating its fourth instant millionaire since the raffle series began in 2006.
The draw was conducted inside the Qatar Duty Free shops at Doha International Airport, presided over by Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker and senior staff from Qatar Duty Free Company.
Winner of the US$1 million, Mr Sainuddin M Parayankatil, purchased his ticket in December 2008 while travelling to his home in Kerala, India. Upon learning of his win, Parayankatil was excited beyond words.
“I couldn’t believe that I had won, and I called Qatar Duty Free several times to confirm that I was the winner,” he said.
Parayankatil, who works for a local bank in Doha, said that he had entered similar draws in the past, but that it was the first time he had purchased a ticket for the Qatar Duty Free Millionaire draw. The delighted winner said that he planned to ensure the future of his family as well as to donate some of his winnings to charities in Kerala that help underprivileged children receive access to a decent education.
Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said that he was delighted with the popularity of the millionaire dollar draw, and offered his congratulations to the winner.
“The Qatar Duty Free Company Million Dollar Draw is an exciting attraction for duty free shoppers at Doha International Airport. I offer my personal congratulations to Mr Parayankatil on being the lucky winner of the latest draw, and to those that missed out this time, there’s always another chance to win next time,” said Al Baker following the draw.
In a second raffle, French national Mr Jean-Marc Fabre, became the lucky winner of a brand new 2009 Lexus 570 luxury four wheel drive passenger vehicle. The car, which had been on display at Qatar Duty Free, was the only prize in a limited number ticket draw. Fabre, who lives in France, was excited by the win but unsure how he would collect his prize.
“My initial reaction was surprise, and of course I wanted to make sure that I had really won. Once the news of the win had sunk in, obviously I was very happy,” said Fabre.
The Frenchman bought his ticket while transiting at Doha International Airport on his way to the Maldives where he was holidaying. Fabre said that he was very pleased with the service received about Qatar Duty Free and Qatar Airways and would definitely fly the airline again in the future.
The US dollar millionaire raffle was launched in May 2006 giving passengers a great opportunity to win the bumper prize as each draw is made after 5,000 tickets are sold. Departing and transiting passengers at Doha International Airport are able to purchase raffle tickets for USD 263/QAR950 each.
