Doha, QATAR – British number one Andy Murray made a perfect start to the New Year by successfully defending his Qatar Airways-sponsored Qatar Open title last night with a convincing win against American Andy Roddick.
The world number four won in straight sets 6–4, 6–2 in just over an hour to clinch the Doha title for the second successive year in front of a packed crowd.
Qatar Airways was proud to once again be the Official Airline and sponsor of the first major tennis tournament of the year with the five-day event held at the Khalifa Tennis Complex in the Qatari capital.
On his way to success at the Qatar Exxon Mobil Tennis Tournament, Murray beat former world number one Roger Federer in the semi-finals. The event also attracted the world number one Rafael Nadal.
Murray is now firm favourite to win the Australian Open – the first Grand Slam of 2009 – when the two-week event begins in Melbourne next week.
Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said: “Qatar Airways was delighted to fly the world’s top players and officials to Doha for what was an exciting week of tennis.
“We are proud to be a key player in the world of sport and what better opportunity to have had the best tennis players in the world on our doorstep this week. I would like to wish Andy Murray the best of luck in Australia next week. Sport plays a key role in everyday life and Qatar Airways is proud to commit to supporting sport as part of its ongoing marketing and communications strategy.”
