Doha, QATAR – World number five Maria Sharapova continued her remarkable winning streak this year by clinching the Qatar Total Open sponsored by Qatar Airways.
Her three-set victory over fellow Russain Vera Zvonareva ensured a 14-match unbeaten run, which includes triumphing at the Australian Open last month.
As Official Airline of the prestigious Qatar Total Open, Qatar Airways was privileged to fly some of the world’s best players to Doha to take part in the $US2.5m week-long event which ended last night.
In front of a packed crowd at the 5,000-seater Khalifa Tennis Complex, Sharapova overcame a temporary lapse midway through the match to win 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 in what was her second success in Qatar after winning the tournament in 2005.
Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker hailed this year’s event as the best ever and praised crowd favourite Maria Sharapova for continuing her 2008 unbeaten run in Doha.
“Maria Sharapova has been a firm favourite in Qatar for many years. Her dynamic start to the 2008 season continued over the past week and our congratulations go out to her for a wonderful performance.
“We at Qatar Airways are proud to have been part of this exciting tournament flying players, officials and spectators from around the world for seven days of great tennis.”
