Doha, QATAR – Bollywood megastars Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan will grace the red carpet for the ‘Reach Out To Asia’ inaugural charity event taking place in Doha on November 16.
Former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, dubbed the ‘Queen of Bollywood’, and her co-star in numerous movies, Indian heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan, are lending their support to this important charity initiative recently launched in Qatar.
Aishwarya Rai has graced the front covers of glossy magazines around the world and is currently the face of leading international cosmetics house L’Oreal. She was on architecture student and aspiring model in India when she won the Miss World title in 1994.
Winning the beauty pageant gave her a breakthrough in Bollywood – the world’s largest movie industry – which she has since taken by storm as an actress and accomplished dancer. She has now set her sights on Hollywood.
Shah Rukh Khan has earned the reputation of being one of the most versatile actors in India with his powerful performances across all types of films – from comedy to emotional drama. His performances have grabbed the headlines and have earned him accolades across India with his own unique style wooing cinema audiences in the subcontinent and around the world.
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan recently hailed Shah Rukh Khan as the country’s best actor. Bollywood is the centre of India’s movie business churning out more than 800 films a year, mainly from Mumbai.
Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan will be part of the star-studded ‘Reach Out To Asia’ launch event attended by personalities from the world of sport, showbusiness, politics and Royalty at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in the Qatari capital. The event is the biggest of its kind ever held in Qatar and, for the first time, will feature ‘red carpet’ celebrity arrivals often associated with movie premieres.
Qatar Foundation, Qatar Airways and the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) are spearheading the ‘Reach Out To Asia’ fund-raising campaign for the underprivileged and disadvantaged across Asia. The campaign is aimed at Qatar extending the hand of friendship and help to the many countries across the Asian continent which are experiencing serious social difficulties in terms of poverty, inadequate healthcare, homelessness, disease and natural disasters, such as last year’s devastating tsunami and recent earthquake in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.
Over the next few weeks and months, the three organisations will work collectively to drive the fund-raising efforts, which will involve a series of high-profile events in Doha, including charity concerts and exclusive gala dinners – the first of which takes place on November 16. With Doha hosting the Asian Games in December 2006, Qatar’s focus on the Asian continent is more relevant than ever before.
Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan will be joined by Bryan Adams as special guests at the charity dinner where the Canadian singer will also perform a few of his songs on the night. He will return to Doha on February 1 for a live charity concert in aid of ‘Reach Out To Asia’.
The November 16 event will also include a live charity auction of items donated by sports and showbiz celebrities. The auction will be conducted by a senior representative from the infamous London auction house Sotheby’s.
Media personality Richard Quest, one of CNN’s most high profile news and business anchors and correspondents, will be the official Master of Ceremonies. In addition to presenting CNN’s European morning editions of Business International, he also has his own monthly interview show, Quest and the monthly feature programme, CNN Business Traveller.
‘Reach Out To Asia’ has been put together under the auspices of Her Highness Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, daughter of the Emir of Qatar. The inaugural charity dinner takes place under the patronage of The Heir Apparent His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani – who is also chairperson of the Asian Games – and Her Excellency Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Sohaim Al Thani.
Sheikha Mayassa said: “We are extremely honoured to have two of India’s biggest movie stars on the night which promises to be an evening to remember.
“Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan are known for their compassion and help towards charitable events and it is indeed a wonderful opportunity to see them grace the red carpet in Doha in just two weeks’ time.”
Doha-based Qatar Foundation will run and manage ‘Reach Out to Asia’ in line with the Foundation’s mission to promote education, science and community development in Qatar.
Qatar Airways, the national airline of the State of Qatar, and official partner of the Asian Games Doha 2006, operates an extensive network of flights across Asia. In supporting the ‘Reach Out To Asia’ charity drive, the airline is committed to give back to communities of the countries it flies to.
