The Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

With historical records dating back to 3150 BC, Egypt is home to some of the oldest ancient monuments in the world. The most famous attraction, the Pyramids of Giza, are the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to remain largely intact.

Take a selfie with the Sphinx, explore the Giza plateau on camelback, or journey through the Great Pyramid where you can see the empty sarcophagus of the Pharaoh Khufu. You won’t run into any mummies inside the pyramids, but you can voyage to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, which displays 20 mummified remains of ancient Egyptian kings and queens.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Reaching nearly 20,000 feet in the air, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and among the continent’s most epic sites. “Kili” demands healthy lungs and legs, though it is accessible to anyone with a sense of determination and an adventurous spirit.

Five- to twelve-day treks take hikers through the banana- and yam-farming croplands of the lower slopes to lush tropical forest to misty heath and moorlands to alpine desert to – finally – the glacier-topped Arctic ice cap of the summit. Travelers looking for something extraordinary will find it here.

Victoria Falls, Zambia

Victoria Falls is the largest moving body of water on earth, almost double the height of Niagara Falls and 1,640 feet wider. Also called Msoi-oa-Tunya, “Smoke that Thunders,” the falling water creates a mist rising almost 250 feet in the air and a sound that can be heard for 25 miles.

Thrill-seekers can take part in white water rafting, ziplining, or bungee jumping around the falls, or even swim in Devil’s Pool where they can peer over the edge for a panoramic view. For the more easy-going traveler, sunset river cruises and relaxing spa treatments are also available.

Sahara Desert, Northern Africa

Meaning, “The Greatest Desert,” in Arabic, the Sahara lives up to its name by spanning across 11 countries. As the largest hot desert in the world, it covers an area of over 3 million square miles – approximately the size of the United States – and was declared one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013.

Desert visitors can participate in various activities depending on their energy level. Take an exhilarating ride over the sand dunes with a quad bike or a leisurely stroll on a camel. If stationary activities are more your style, visit a desert day spa in Morocco where you can take a hot sand bath. Finish off your Sahara adventure by "glamping" and stargazing.
