Arriving in Luxor
Luxor’s names translates as ‘Palaces’, and that is exactly what visitors booking a flight to Luxor with Qatar Airways will discover.
This is the epicentre of Ancient Egypt’s temples and monuments, and for anyone with a love of archaeology and the ancient world, a trip to Luxor is a dream come true.
Splendid temples are complemented by a modern and energetic city that attracts business travellers as well as tourists.
Sitting opposite the ancient site of Thebes, Luxor is a great location for travellers who want to discover Egypt’s remarkable history, its monumental remains and its warm, friendly people.
Luxor is one of those locations where almost every square mile has some kind of attraction.
The main sites that should be on every itinerary are the Temple of Luxor (particularly spectacular when lit up at night), the Valley of the Queens and the Valley of the Kings (where King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1923), Hatshepsut Temple in Deir el-Bchari, the Needle Monument in Karnak Temple and the incredible forest of pillars in the Great Hypostyle Hall.
Back in the city a visit to the Mummification Museum gives you a glimpse into the intricacies of this ancient practice, as well as a fantastic array of artefacts and grave goods dating back thousands of years.
The Mosque of Abu Haggag stands on the ruins of Luxor Temple, and sits easily alongside its more ancient counterpart. It is a beautiful mosque and a peaceful, serene location for contemplation and devotions.
The New Corniche is a broad, well-maintained walkway along the harbour that makes a pleasant change from the dust and heat of central Luxor.
However, it is well worth braving the crowds and visiting the city’s bustling markets and souqs as well – avoid the tourist ‘trinket’ sellers that swarm around the main attractions and look instead for better quality souvenirs of your visit in the city itself.
Flights to Luxor with Qatar Airways land at Luxor International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure.
