Tourist attractions
You will not go wanting for museums when you travel to Berlin. Don’t miss the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf Museum and the Kulturforum near the famous Potsdamer Platz. In the city centre, you will also find Museum Island, a complex featuring five world-renowned museums. The area has been granted “world heritage site” status by UNESCO.
For more cultural immersion, visit the Art Centre Berlin Friedrichstrasse, and historic buildings like the Berliner Dom, Marienkirche and the Brandenburg Gate. At 368 metres, Fernsehturm, or TV Tower, is Berlin’s tallest building. If you have a head for heights, go to the tower’s observation deck, which sits at an elevation of 203 metres, for a bird’s-eye view of Berlin.
The Kollhoff Tower in Potsdamer Platz also has a good observation deck and any trip to the city should also include a visit to the Siegessäule Victory Column in Tiergarten. -
Leisure activities
There are plenty of things to do during a trip to Berlin. For a pleasant walk, take a stroll around the Tiergarten, the biggest park here, or Viktoriapark, which has some of the finest views across Berlin. There is also a popular beach at “Berlin’s bath tub”, the Wannsee.
If you’re a fan of the theatre, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The most popular classical theatre is the Deutsches Theater, with contemporary acts in the Berliner Ensemble. English language shows can be seen in the English Theatre Berlin. There are also four opera houses, the most prestigious being the Deutsche Oper. -
Food
Dining out in Berlin is relatively inexpensive when compared to other parts of Western Europe. The best area for eating is Hackescher Markt on Oranienburger Strasse. Many small restaurants feature old Art Deco furniture, offering a particularly pleasant evening dining experience.
For five-star dining, head to City West, where you’ll find some top-quality restaurants, particularly on Potsdamer Platz. Berlin’s restaurant scene presents an eclectic mix of options. However, if you want to sample authentic Prussian fare, try the königsberger klopse. This dish is made of boiled veal meatballs and traditionally served with potatoes and beetroot. -
Shopping
If you’re travelling to Berlin with shopping in mind, you’re in for a real treat. One of the main shopping streets here is Tauentzienstrasse, which specialises in luxury goods. Just north of the Hackesche Markt is a popular area for up-market shopping, while Prenzlauer Berg has many good designer shops.
There are also many large shopping malls in Berlin that house hundreds of smaller shops, such as Alexa in Alexanderplatz and the Ring Centre in Friedrichshain.
