Get ready for the set

Location scouts have a pretty enviable job: sent to every corner of the world to find the most iconic, strange, or dramatic landscapes and buildings on the planet. Sometimes, a film can’t be separated from the location in which its filmed – who could imagine Le Dolce Vita set anywhere but Rome, and the busy terraces of West London are almost themselves a character in Notting Hill.

At other times though, particularly in sci-fi and fantasy films, we see landscapes and buildings that seem almost too fantastical to be real places. Here are some of the ones that astonished us the most, and advice on how to get to them with Qatar Airways.

The Middle East

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade features one of the most famous shots in cinema; the camera moves through a twisting canyon, and slowly, as it rounds the corner, the façade of a classical temple rears into view – seemingly cut out of the rock face itself.

This isn’t a set, but a real place, the temple of Al Khazneh in Petra, Jordan. The temple, and the valley that leads to it has since been featured in Arabian Nights, Transformers, The Mummy Returns, and Samsara. It’s not an easy trip, being located 235km from Jordan’s capital city of Ammam, but well worth it.

Asia

These ones are adventures, but worth it. Fly with Qatar Airways to New Delhi or Ahmedabad, before hopping on the train or catching a flight to Jodhphur. Here, you’ll find the Mehrangar Fort complex, built in 1459. Its stark design made it a perfect choice to stand in for Bane’s prison in The Dark Knight Rises – you can see the same pit which Batman escaped from in the film’s third act.

Get your documents in order

Depending on your destination, you may need proof of different vaccinations before you travel. This isn’t just Covid-19; Saudi Arabia requires visitors for the Hajj to prove vaccination against certain types of meningitis, while the NHS recommends vaccination against typhoid if travelling to South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Oceania

One destination that stands out as a filming location: New Zealand. Its spectacular landscapes provided the backdrop for the blockbuster Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Fly into Auckland, making use of Qatar Airways’ free Super Wi-Fi to keep you entertained en route, and start your travels!

Less than two hours from Auckland you’ll find Hobbiton, where Bilbo and Frodo began their thrilling quests. Head down to the southern coast of the North Island and you can visit the Putangira Pinnacles Reserve – the backdrop for Aragorn’s entry into the Paths of the Dead.
