Malta travel highlights
Valletta, Malta's capital, is one of Europe’s best persevered medieval cities, perfect for a short trip in the midst of the Mediterranean. Stroll through the city’s streets and immerse yourself in its local feel, culture, and history.

Tourist attractions
In Valletta, it’s easy to stumble across historical buildings, but one of the best has to be St John’s Cathedral. Don’t be put off by its relatively plain exterior as the inside of this magnificent building is genuinely breath-taking. The frescos are extraordinary and don’t forget to look down too, as the intricate designs of the marble floor are stunning, earning it the accolade of the ‘most beautiful floor in the world’.
For beautiful views of the harbour in a more tranquil surrounding, head to the Upper Barrakka Gardens on the south side of the peninsula. For some highbrow culture, the Manoel Theatre is charming and one of the oldest theatres in Europe still putting on classical music concerts and plays, as well as family-friendly Christmas pantomimes.
Dominating the city is the Palace of the Grand Masters. While it’s now currently home to the President’s office and the Maltese Parliament, the staterooms are open to the public on occasion and are genuinely impressive. While you’re there, take a detour to the Knight’s Armoury, where you can find out more about the Knights of St. John who were so influential in the development of Malta.

Leisure activities
The easiest way to relax and unwind on your trip to Valletta is to take a leisurely stroll along the city walls. Make sure you take a camera, as the views from the southern peninsula are exceptional, especially at sunset.
For a little touch of pomp and circumstance, head to the Saluting Battery at noon and 4pm, where a restored naval cannon is fired to mark the hour. It’s noisy fun that the children will love.
If you’re a Game of Thrones fan then you can join a tour and see some of the spots that have acted as backdrops to one of the world’s most popular fantasy TV series. Other tours will take you to the Ta Qali Crafts Village, via the catacombs of Rabat and the stunning Dingli Cliffs.
Malta’s link to the sea is still strong, so it’s easy to charter a boat and go fishing, or just laze on a yacht while you sail around this rugged, picturesque island in the sun.

Food
The best restaurants in the Maltese capital can be found lining the harbour, and at night you can choose anything from fusion cuisine to burgers and fries, pizza to authentic seafood dishes. Fresh fish is served almost everywhere, and you can also look out for other typically Maltese dishes such as Lampuki Pie (a succulent fish pie), rustic rabbit stew, bragioli (beef olives) served with kapunata, (which is a Maltese version of ratatouille, and gbejniet, which is cheese made with sheep or goat’s milk.

Shopping
Most tourists head to Republic Street for their shopping, which is pedestrianised and very relaxed, although it can get a little busy during the summer. South Street is excellent for affordable souvenirs and trinkets, or you can head to the daily market in Triq il-Merkanti (Merchants Street).
