SeaWorld is one of San Diego’s top attractions. This vast and colourful amusement park overlooks the oceanfront and features dolphin displays and many other attractions as well as dining options, making it a great destination for all the family.

San Diego Zoo is famous worldwide for its conservation work and its more than 4,000 endangered and rare animals. Its collection of 700,000 exotic plants is unequalled.

The museums and other facilities and attractions of Balboa Park is the biggest urban cultural park in the States, famous for its performing arts installations and stunning gardens, as well as being home to San Diego Zoo.
The kids will adore Legoland, which features more than 50 family rides as well as many hands-on shows and other attractions in its 128 acres.

Leisure activities

The Gaslamp Quarter is a must-see on any trip to San Diego. It is the main entertainment, dining and shopping district of the city and has bags of atmosphere. If you want somewhere with charm and plenty of small independent outlets, this is the place to come.

The harbour setting of Seaport Village makes it ideal for relaxing over a long lunch and watching the working boats and yachts come and go. With multiple waterfront restaurants and numerous specialist shops, it’s a great place to just walk around.

Alternatively, experience a floating city on board USS Midway, a floating museum built into an aircraft carrier. Explore half a century of naval history in this huge ship’s many interactive exhibits.

Last but by no means least, the beaches of San Diego epitomise a way of life here, where locals and visitors alike can live out the Californian dream on sun-soaked golden sands.

Shops and restaurants are close by and many different water sports are always on offer, particularly surfing.  Nearby towns of Del Mar, La Jolla, and Encinitas offer a great alternative to downtown and a collection of some of the best beaches in America.

Eating in San Diego

San Diego has a great cultural and ethnic mix and this is reflected in its food. There are numerous steakhouses and seafood restaurants, and because it’s so close to its southern neighbour, the city has many authentic Mexican restaurants.

There are also many local specialty dishes here, and haute cuisine and border fare are also readily available.

You’ll find the most popular restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter, La Jolla, Little Italy, Old Town and Hillcrest. Wood-fired pizza, street tacos, carne asada fries and enchiladas are all San Diego specialties and should be tried at least once.

Shopping in San Diego

The Gaslamp Quarter is the best area of the city to explore if you’re travelling to San Diego for the shopping. With a fabulous range of top international brands as well as independent outlets selling local produce, this neighbourhood has been a magnet for shoppers since the 19th century.

The Victorian buildings of this historic quarter often feature vintage settings and are packed with sweets and souvenirs, eyewear, brilliant accessories and chic headgear.

If you prefer shopping in the big malls, the best of these include Fashion Valley Centre, Otay Ranch Town Centre and Westfield Plaza Bonita, and there are plenty of others too.
