Tourist attractions

The best way to get around on your trip to Lahore is by tuk-tuk or on foot; you'll see more of the city's architecture whilst walking. During the hot summer months, mornings are coolest and the best time to explore the city's attractions.

The Walled City is one of the world's oldest cities and is home to Lahore Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Mughals once held imperial quarters here and it's also worth visiting the small museum. Stroll around the Badshahi Mosque or explore the Inner City with its little palaces and shrines, including Asif Jah Haveli and the Imperial Baths.

Lahore once had 13 city gates and you can still see some of these imposing structures today. The Raushnai Gate between the citadels and royal mosque is a great spot for photos.

Leisure activities

It's a well-known fact that people in Pakistan go crazy for cricket. If you're lucky enough to be in the country when a high-profile international match is on, make sure you get tickets. Matches are usually held at Al Gadaffi Stadium.

There's plenty for all ages here, and families will enjoy a day out at Lahore Safari Zoo, a drive-in zoo covering 242 acres. Here you'll spot lions, Bengal tigers, emus and more.

When you travel to Lahore, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the hubbub of the city, so search out some peace and quiet at one of the city's green spaces. Changa Manga forest and lake is a popular picnic spot where you can hire a rowboat for an afternoon on the water.

Eating in Lahore

Locals are passionate about their food, and Lahori fare is more palatable and less spicy than food from other parts of the country. Street food here is a popular and affordable choice, and Gawalmandi's 'Food Street' is easy to reach by rickshaw.

Here you will find shops and street vendors selling local specialities such as Chapli Kaba, Makkai Ki Roti (corn flour bread) and Sardar Ki Machli (fried fish).

Shopping in Lahore

Travel to Lahore and you'll discover that the old city's bazaars are everything you dreamed of – winding alleyways, donkey-led carts and the constant cry of vendors selling their wares for the best price. The perfect place to barter for bargains, shopping at the city's bazaars is an experience not to be missed. Anarkali Bazaar is one of the oldest, named after a courtesan who was buried alive after falling in love with a prince. As you explore this treasure trove, you'll find everything from locally-produced handicrafts and fabrics to clothing and unusual souvenirs.

Fabric and handicrafts are a popular purchase; head for Mozang Bazaar for hand-block printed bedspreads and tablecloths or Ichra Bazaar for high quality cotton and unstitched silk. Liberty Market, a more modern market, is also a good place to find handicrafts and clothing. For an afternoon of shopping for luxury goods and designer brands, Xinhua Mall is the place to be for top-name brands.
