Tourist attractions

The best way to see the city is on foot and most major attractions are within walking distance. One of Copenhagen's most famous attractions is The Little Mermaid sculpture. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy story, Edvard Eriksen's sculpture can be seen at Copenhagen harbour.

Take a trip to Copenhagen and you'll see the city's rich history is evident around every corner. Kronborg Castle, just north of the city is a must-see. Built in the late 1500s, the castle is known from Shakespeare's Hamlet. In the summer months, you can see open-air performances of the play here.

Tivoli Gardens, close to City Hall, is a popular spot for families. Take a ride on the 100 year-old roller coaster, or enjoy open-air film screenings in the summer months, as well as live music everyday. Every Saturday a fireworks display is held here. The fountains, lakes and picnic spots offer the perfect place to relax in the heart of the city.

Leisure activities

Copenhagen is renowned for its museums, and no trip to Copenhagen would be complete without exploring the Danish National Gallery. Here you'll find art from Matisse, Picasso and Rembrandt. The Arken Museum of Modern Art is the best place to find contemporary Scandinavian art.

For stunning views over the city, climb the Rundetårn (Round Tower) to the observation platform. Or visit the Danish Design Centre – the building was designed by architect Henning Larsen.

On sunny days, Havnebadet at Island Brygge is a popular outdoor pool and beach area where you will often find local families. For cooler days, DGI Byen leisure centre offers excellent swimming facilities.

Eating in Copenhagen

Danish cuisine focuses on local produce and there are some great places in Copenhagen to experience a traditional Danish lunch. Smørrebrød, or open-faced sandwiches, are a popular choice. These are usually made with rye bread and a variety of toppings, such as seafood, eggs or herring.

It is possible to enjoy fine dining at Michelin-star restaurants or budget dining on the go in Copenhagen. Buffet restaurants are a great place to enjoy local cuisine – the most unusual include herring buffet restaurants, which offer grilled herrings in a variety of different marinades. For fine dining, the Inner City and Frederiksberg offer plenty of international restaurants.

Copenhagen's bakeries are the perfect place to pick up sandwiches for lunch or pastries and coffee for breakfast.

Shopping in Copenhagen

High-end fashion and design stores line the 1.1km Strøget, one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets. While the vibe here may be overtly commercial, it is a great spot to find designer fashion and accessories.

Head for the Old City to find a range of independent boutiques. Prices here are still high but it's here you will find quirkier offerings, from home accessories and fashion to souvenirs. Nørrebro is also a great area for independent craft shops and boutiques.

Travel to Copenhagen and you simply can't afford to miss the city's flea markets. Halmtorvet, near the Central Station offers high-quality clothing and accessories. Nørrebro Flea market, Denmark's longest street market, runs on Saturdays from April to October. For unusual souvenirs, antiques and second-hand goods, this is a must.
