Fly to Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) with Qatar Airways from London or Manchester and experience a delightful step back in time. Acknowledged as ‘The Garden City of the East’, Yangon is rich in luscious greenery, with tropical flowers, trees and stunning lakes. It is a city with cultural influences of the British, Burmese, Chinese and Indian traditions where today you can still see people wearing the longyi, a piece of clothing similar to a sarong. Yangon is also known for its old style colonial buildings that date back to a time of British occupation.
The former capital, Yangon is situated in the south of Myanmar (Burma) at the convergence of the Yangon and Bago rivers. Although no longer the capital, Yangon remains the business, cultural and economic hub of Myanmar.
The centrepiece of the city is the striking and spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda, built during the time of Buddha, according to legend. It is the most sacred Buddhist site in Myanmar which enshrines strands of Buddha’s hair and other holy relics. Across the country, Myanmar is famed for its Buddhist temples and monasteries which dominate the land.
Yangon also offers tourists a variety of open-air markets, where bartering is expected. There is a two mile stretch of food stalls for food on the go or alternatively visitors can choose from a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisines.
In many ways, time has stood still in Yangon and because of this it is a relatively inexpensive place to visit. There are no ATMs, the US dollar is an accepted currency for exchange at the banks, foreign SIM cards do not work and most hotels have to be booked by phone as they do not have email.
Yangon is a vibrant, dynamic city and one of the most distinctive and exotic places to visit in Southeast Asia.
