Tourist attractions

The New National Museum is a great day out for families. Usually, Museums are aimed at adults. However, the Museum has an addition in the form of The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, giving younger guests and inquisitive adults the chance to see how children played in the past. The museum is located on the grounds of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, which is also home to the impressive Kansas Repertory Theatre. Here you can enjoy American classics, alongside musicals and Shakespeare plays.

A trip to Kansas City ought to leave some time for a visit to the Kansas Zoo – especially if you’re travelling to Kansas City with children. The latest attraction is the Orang-utan Canopy, which comprises 3,400 square feet of outdoor space, giving visitors the chance to see this endangered species. However, if your little ones need to burn off some excess energy then take them along to the Peanut Gallery. Constructed to commemorate the publication of the Peanuts comic strip, it’s a fascinating fusion of artistic exhibitions and a family fun park.

Kauffman Stadium is a must for any sports fans. It’s the home of the Kansas City Royals and one of the most beautiful ballparks in the country. Baseball is a hugely popular sport in Kansas and you may well be able to catch a game on your trip to Kansas City.  If you visit the city during the fall, you can see the Kansas City Chiefs play American football.

Leisure attractions

If you’ve got an interest in the pioneers of the Old West, then your trip to Kansas City ought to incorporate a visit to the National Frontier Trails Museum, where you’ll be given an insight into the lives of the first settlers to the region. There’s plenty for younger visitors to see and get involved in, and the museum boasts the largest collection of documents and artefacts from that time.

However, not all Kansas City’s attractions are above ground. The Kansas Underground Salt Museum offers the opportunity for subterranean adventure, which tells the story of the area’s salt beds. You can even journey into the mines aboard the Salt Mine Express - an underground train that takes you to parts of the mine that have remained untouched for over 50 years.

A trip to Kansas City wouldn’t be complete without taking some time to appreciate its spectacular scenery. Pay a visit to the Flint Hills, where you’ll see the largest tallgrass prairie in the world and seize the opportunity to go wildlife spotting and birdwatching. The nearby Maxwell Refuge houses bison, which once roamed the Hills.

Eating in Kansas City

Kansas City is a big city for people with big appetites. While it’s possible to find diners and restaurants serving sumptuous cuisine from virtually every corner of the world, for a true taste of the Sunflower State seek out restaurants that serve traditional, American barbeque.

Typical meals include beef ribs; Kansas has a long history of barbecue and they believe they do it better than anywhere else in the world. Pan-fried chicken and mashed potato is another common dish but if you’ve got a sweet tooth, keep an eye out for cafés serving cinnamon rolls – moist bread stuffed with cinnamon paste and deep-fried.

Shopping in Kansas City

This is a city with shopping in its bones and if you’re travelling to Kansas with retail therapy in mind, then you’ve come to the right place. The various districts are overflowing with pristine malls, chic boutiques, markets and discount outlets, and the city even lays claim to the world’s first outdoor shopping mall.

The Country Club Plaza district is the perfect stop for those who enjoy the finer things in life. Here you’ll find upmarket stores and designer goods, surrounded by fine restaurants and cafés. For something more eclectic, make your way to the Brookside district, where you’ll find more independent shops and retailers.
