Istanbul is a city that famously bestrides two continents – the meeting point of east and west. Its natural setting is breathtakingly spectacular and beautiful. Surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Sea of Marmara, Bosporus and Golden Horn, and packed with cultural and historic treasures, Istanbul is a city like no other. Aside from its timeless monuments like the Blue Mosque, there are also great new shopping malls and exclusive restaurants to make your visit a truly exciting one.
Dominated, not by its terminals but by the magnificent mosque that lies at the very heart of the complex, Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport is a rapidly expanding air transport hub that is becoming increasingly important to the region.
Qatar Airways flights from Riyadh connect this busy business hub to Doha with regular daily flights. The airport itself is modern with interesting architectural focal points that draw on traditional Islamic design.
Parking and transportation
The airport’s parking facilities are excellent, and situated very close to the main terminals. Two very large multi-storey garages are located directly in front of the passenger terminals, on either side of the mosque. With a capacity to hold up to 11,600 vehicles, there is plenty of space in both long and short-term parking areas.
The car parks are connected to the terminals and the mosque by pedestrian walkways under the arrivals level roadway. While there is no public transport to the airport, there are shuttle services from some of the more popular hotels, and a fleet of taxis transport passengers to, and from, the airport. Please note that women are not allowed to drive on public roads in Saudi Arabia.
Arriving in Riyadh
Qatar Airways flights from Riyadh depart from Terminal 1. Moving walkways connect the main terminals (including Terminal 1) and are located in the three link buildings between the terminals.
Airbridges connect passengers to their flights from the departures area, removing the need for bus journeys out to the aircraft.
Facilities and amenities
The focus of the airport is the main mosque, a beautiful building that can house up to 5,000 worshippers inside and a further 5,000 in the plaza outside. Within Terminal 1, there are a range of retail outlets selling luxury goods, travel essentials, books and magazines.
Other facilities include a bank, ATM machines, and a range of cafés and restaurants serving quality international cuisine, snacks and beverages.
Sitting astride the Bosphorus, the iconic city of Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both culturally and physically, giving it a unique perspective on both cultures, and a character unlike any other major city.
This energetic, frenetic city has been at the very heart of trade between the two continents for thousands of years, and today is just as important strategically, and a natural magnet for tourists looking for a fascinating and unique location.

Istanbul’s myriad of ancient monuments date back to the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. Most, including the Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque), and Basilica Cistern are clustered around Sultanahmet Square, making a tour of some of the city’s finest attractions easy.
However, it is worth wandering a little further afield, and a stroll across the Golden Horn will bring you to Galata. This district to the north is full of its own attractions, including the Galata Tower, which provides visitors with magnificent panoramic views of the city.
If you’re interested in seeing some of the best examples of contemporary Turkish art then head to the Istanbul Modern on the waterfront.
A site of considerable religious importance and the home of another iconic image of Istanbul are the Galata Whirling Dervish Hall of Sufi Mevlevi order; you’ll find this to the north of the Galata Tower.
