Mashhad is considered by many to be the holiest city in Iran and is home to many important cultural and historical landmarks. These include the Imam Reza Shrine – in fact Mashhad means “Burial Place of the Martyr” – and museums where you can encounter the city’s rich history. As well as being a popular tourist destination, Mashhad is also an important economic hub and a famous centre of learning.

Flying from Hofuf, Saudi Arabia

This major commercial hub in the south east of Saudi Arabia is best known as one of the largest date producers in the world. Alongside its ultra-modern commercial and technical centre cluster traditional souks and markets, making this city an eclectic blend of ancient and modern.

Its airport, Al-Ahsa International Airport, has recently gained international airport status and is now growing into a busy hub for both internal and international flights. Passengers flying from Hofuf with Qatar Airways will discover a friendly and welcoming departure point where everything is done to make the start of your journey as pleasant as possible.

Transportation and parking

The airport is approximately 15 miles from the city centre. Buses and taxis run to and from the airport regularly, but it is advisable to book a taxi in advance to ensure you are being charged the right fare.

Ask your hotel concierge to make arrangements for you. Alternatively, limousine services can be booked for a VIP start to your journey. Parking is limited and fills up very quickly.

Arriving in Hofuf

Passengers flying from Hofuf’s Al-Ahsa airport will depart from the main terminal. As the airport is relatively small, it is quite easy to find your way around, although it is advised that you arrive at least one and a half to two hours before your designated departure time to ensure you can clear security checks and check in.

Facilities and amenities

Facilities are limited, although as the airport expands these should improve. A small selection of retailers sell travel essentials, while light drinks and snacks are available in the food court.

There are ATM facilities in the terminal, and Wi-Fi is accessible in some areas of the departure area. Mother and baby changing facilities are available, and private prayer rooms are also set aside for devotions.

Arriving in Mashhad

Iran’s holiest city is a remarkable destination for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. This ancient city has a pivotal role in one of the world’s major religions, making it a key location on the cultural map of the Middle East.

Its location in the heart of the Khorasan province means that Mashhad benefits from year-round cool temperatures. Book a flight to Mashhad with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover a vibrant and welcoming destination that also provides a fascinating insight into the Shi'ite culture.

Tourist attractions

The most important location in the city is the Imran Reza shrine, one of the holiest sites to shi'ite Muslims after the Holy Kaaba in Saudi Arabia and Karbala in Iraq. Please note that photography at the shrine is strictly forbidden.

Like many cities in Iran, Mashhad has some beautifully tranquil open spaces, representing the importance of natural beauty and gardening in particular to the Persian culture.

These parks also tend to be home to the tombs of important historical figures, such as the tomb of Nadir Shah. Mellat Park also has some more modern attractions for children such as the tallest Ferris wheel or fanfar in Iran, while Koohestan Park-e-Shadi Complex includes a well-run zoo.

The tomb of Khajeh Rabi' is located 6km north of the city, where you will also find some beautifully preserved inscriptions by the renowned Safavid calligrapher Reza Abbasi.

As you travel around the city you will notice a number of sculptures. Mashhad has a history of public art, which is celebrated every year around Norouz, the Iranian New Year. Each year, the city's artists gather together in a competition to capture the best city element of Norouz in sculpture. The winner’s sculpture will remain in situ for the rest of the year, with other pieces dotted around the city’s parks.
