With the advent of regular luxury flights from Dammam to Maldives with Qatar Airways, the exotic Maldives are now within easy access reach. On the way you’ll have access to a range of award-winning services, specially designed with your comfort in mind. Enjoy delicious in-flight dining, and step off the plane in Maldives feeling positively rejuvenated.
Maldives may be small but it’s packed with interest and can easily be explored on foot. It’s an extraordinary city, a densely crowded mercantile capital quite unlike the relaxed and easy-going hinterland of resorts and beaches. Amongst these brightly coloured buildings and alcohol-free bars and cafés you’ll find the real Maldivians going about their business, far from the infinity pools and buffets for which the islands are famous.
Surrounded by dramatic sand dunes and the vast open spaces of the Arabian Desert, Dammam Airport (known as King Fahd International Airport) is truly vast with six levels housing a huge selection of facilities, check-in desks, lounges and porter services.
Transportation and parking
The airport has a multi-storey car park attached to it. On the roof of this car park, you can find a mosque, which can be accessed from the passenger terminal through two enclosed, air-conditioned bridges and an additional open bridge.
The airport is around 50 kilometres from Dammam city centre, but is well served by frequent bus links and taxis. Carrier SAPTCO runs shuttle buses between the airport and the bus station every hour. The trip takes around 45 minutes. Taxis are available and are located in the rank outside the main entrance. A limousine service is also available.
Arriving at King Fahd International Airport
There is only one terminal at the airport, but it is vast. Departure check-in is located on Level 6, while boarding gates are on Level 4.
Facilities and amenities
King Fahd International Airport was the first in Saudi Arabia to open duty-free shops within its airport. There is a separate area dedicated to shops selling goods that passengers might find useful during their travels, and in the arrivals area you will also find plenty of cafés, restaurants and banks.
ATMs and currency exchange points are available in the departure and arrival areas. For a light meal with a view, head to the fourth floor (above check-in), where you'll find an observation deck and a café serving a buffet selection of food.
Arriving in Hulhulé after a flight to the Maldives with Qatar Airways, the first thing that will strike you is that this genuinely is a tropical island paradise.
Largely unknown among tourists until the 1970s, the Maldives are today one of the top luxury destinations in the world. Crystal clear oceans, white sandy beaches and swaying palm trees – the Maldives are the epitome of a tropical holiday destination.
The collection of over 1,100 coral islands means that the most common method of transport is by boat or seaplane. Island hopping is a great way to experience the delights above water.
Under the waves there is a second paradise waiting to be explored, and the Maldives offers some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world.
The Maldives is different to many destinations in that there are relatively few attractions to visit on land. The main attractions of the islands are natural, rather than man-made, so to discover the very best of the islands’ riches you will need to don a swimsuit and head out with one of the many diving parties to explore the coral reefs.
Filled with brilliantly coloured fish and a wealth of natural wonders, the waters of the Maldives offer a rich tapestry of aquatic colour and beauty.
If you’re not a swimmer or prefer to stay on dry land then a visit to the nation’s capital island of Malé for some casual shopping and to see the ‘real’ Maldives away from the custom-made resorts of the islands.
