Tourist attractions

Take a trip to Ras Al-Khaimah and you’ll discover a country with a rich archaeological heritage that is constantly being uncovered. Many of the best sites are being preserved for the future, and are turning into considerable attractions in their own right. In 2013, a collection of graves dating back to 2000 B.C. were uncovered during the expansion of the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road project, and due to its continued importance as a major trading centre throughout the ages, other similar sites from across the millennia are also being discovered.

There are also plenty of more recent attractions to tempt visitors, including the mysterious Jazirat Al Hamra Fishing Village and a strangely fascinating ghost village that was established in the 14th century.

Along with fishing, pearl diving was a hugely important part of life in Ras Al-Khaimah for centuries, and the city’s Pearls Museum gives visitors a glimpse into its role in the growth of the country’s fortunes. It’s also home to the ‘Miracle of Arabia,’ a stunning pearl that measures 12 millimetres in diameter.

The natural beauty of the country is a big draw for tourists. One of the best locations is Khatt, a village that is surrounded by towering mountains and is famous for its thermal springs. Visitors can visit Khatt to relax in hot mineralised water that is said to be improve circulation and overall health.

The National Museum of Ras Al-Khaimah, which is housed in a former palace, is  full of exhibits detailing the country’s natural history, folk traditions and crafts.

Leisure activities

The last thing you would expect to find in a country known for its magnificent desert landscape is a polar-themed water park! But the Ice Land Water Park is a great spot for families to cool off, especially during the weekend.

If you want to capture the romance of the desert, then a trip to a recreated Bedouin camp, complete with camel rides and entertainment, will do the trick.

If you like physical challenges, then you could attempt to climb the famous ‘Stairway To Heaven’ mountain trail. While definitely not a hike for the faint hearted, the stunning views of the surrounding landscape from the top of the cliff are well worth the effort.

If you’re visiting during December or January, then look out for the U.A.E Awafi Festival, a three-week event that celebrates the culture of the country and climaxes with a battle of the dune buggies in a dramatic sand dune race between the best 4x4 drivers in the region.
