Book a flight to Muscat from Netherlands with Qatar Airways

As Oman’s capital and largest metropolis, book a flight to Muscat with Qatar Airways and explore an exotic city full of old forts, palaces and museums. Oman has a rich history, and much of it is on display in the capital. It’s a city of souks with echoes of the sultans, and an attractive waterfront where a cooling breeze wafts in from the Indian Ocean. With a flight to Muscat you’ll feel you’ve taken a magic carpet back to the time of the Arabian Nights.

Tourist attractions

On a trip to Muscat your first port of call should be the Bait az-Zubair Museum, which has fascinating displays on many aspects of Omani history and culture. After that, visit the Al Mirani and Al Jalali forts, which now house museums and make great photo opportunities. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the third biggest in the world, and the Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace is home to Oman’s ruler.

A trip to Muscat also provides scope for relaxation with a walk along the Corniche area of Mutrah Fort, with great views across the city and several places to refresh and revive your energy with a glass of tea and a panoramic view.

Leisure activities

There are many activities on offer during a trip to Muscat, from trekking and dolphin watching to horseback riding and scuba diving. For the less energetic, a stroll down to the waterfront for a refreshing Sulaimani (black tea) or Halib (tea with milk) may be more in order.

There are lots of Indian tailors in Muscat who can run you up a suit in cashmere or angora in no time. Don’t forget to visit the souk to get a real taste of the Orient.

Eating in Muscat

There are plenty of budget and mid-range eateries in Muscat like restaurants that serve authentic Omani food such as chicken Jalfrezi.

The Automatic specialises in Lebanese cuisine, and there are Pakistani and Indian dishes also readily available throughout the city.

Shopping in Muscat

When you travel to Muscat for traditional craft items the best place to head for is the Mutrah Souk, a maze of narrow, winding streets lined with all sorts of small outlets. It’s the best of its kind in the Gulf region, and contains many jewellery shops as well as craft outlets.

The locals also like to shop in the Sabco Centre, with several medium-sized stores as well as smaller shops selling craft items. If you prefer not to haggle in the souk for Omani craftwork, drop into the Omani Craftsman’s House opposite here for fixed price items.
