This eclectic city is a mix of ancient bazaars and glistening skyscrapers. Yet there is far more to Mumbai than simply Bollywood and air-conditioned shopping malls.

From the grand colonial and Art Deco buildings, to the warren of bazaars, museums and tourist attractions of South Mumbai, this chaotic city has charm in abundance. Fly to Mumbai with Qatar Airways and explore southern India, or enjoy a longer stay in one of the most fascinating cities on the planet.

Tourist attractions

Travel to Mumbai and be prepared to marvel at the amazing architecture on show. The Taj Mahal Palace, built in 1903, faces the harbour and is one of the city's most famous landmarks. Most of the tourist sights centre around South Mumbai and some of India's most renowned art galleries and museums are conveniently located here.

Kala Ghoda in South Mumbai is the place to head if you're in the mood to wander the city's museums and galleries. It is here you will find the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai's largest museum. Families can enjoy an afternoon exploring the Nehru Science Centre.

Leisure activities

On your trip to Mumbai, it's worth checking out some of the city's beaches. Avoid the overcrowded beaches of South Mumbai and head for the North West, where locals take to the beach on Sunday evenings. This is the best time to soak up some local culture, with food stands and family games taking place before sunset.

You might be surprised to find so many green spaces in the middle of this concrete jungle. Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a must for many tourists, if only to visit the 2,400 year old Kanheri Caves.

No trip to Mumbai is complete without a trip to Film City in Goregaon, where you can watch Bollywood movies being filmed. Or why not take a tour of Dharavi? Walking tours can be booked, with profits supporting local initiatives. On a sunny afternoon, a harbour cruise or tour of the markets with a local guide is a great way to pass the time.

Eating in Mumbai

It's easy to find cuisine from every corner of the globe in Mumbai, but for a real taste of local specialities, Irani cafés and street food vendors are the best option. Don't miss the opportunity to experience Indian sweets such as Kulfi falooda, or a taste of Vada pav, Indian vegetable burger. Enjoy authentic Marathi cuisine such as Sabudana Wada (deep fried dumplings) or Zunka Bhakari (spicy vegetable dish served with roti).

Dining at a traditional Irani café is the perfect place to sample samosa as you mingle with the locals. Thali, a complete meal with bread, rice, pickles and a variety of curries, is popular here. Or cool off during hot Mumbai summers with Melwad ice cream from a street vendor.

Shopping in Mumbai

When you travel to Mumbai, you'll notice that shopping here is still inexpensive by Western standards.

Shopping in Mumbai gives you a chance to experience the contrast between rich and poor, from the street vendors and bazaars to the array of luxury goods available in the city’s air-conditioned malls. Take a local guide and haggle for clothing, carpets, souvenirs and jewellery at the city's bazaars. Fashion Street is the best place for affordable clothing, whilst Colaba Causeway is popular for carpets and souvenirs. For jewellery, head for Zaveri Bazaar.

Look out for hand-stitched leather jackets in Dharavi, Khadi clothing and handicrafts as well as saris and pashminas.
