Tourist attractions

Although Hong Kong Island itself is what many visitors assume to be the sum of the state, the larger part of Hong Kong lies on the Kowloon Peninsula. The Hong Kong island section is where the greatest level of commercial development has taken place. The New Territories offer unspoiled country parks, while the outlying island of Lantau is home to Hong Kong’s very own Disneyland.

Many visitors choose to remain on the Hong Kong Island during a trip to Hong Kong. Here you’ll find plenty of attractions to explore including the famous Victoria Peak for its fantastic view of the city’s ever-growing skyline, the Zoological and Botanical Gardens, and Ocean Park. On the Kowloon Peninsula, there are also many cultural and historical attractions, including the historic early-20th century Clock Tower and museums like the Hong Kong Space Museum and Museum of Art. But if you get a chance, do venture a little further onto the mainland to the local districts. Here you’ll discover a more sedate and Chinese-influenced culture that is in sharp contrast to the urban vibrancy of the Island.

Cultural considerations

Hong Kong is much more westernised than other regions of China, owing to its many years of British colonial rule. Despite its European influences, it has an inherently Chinese culture that those who travel to Hong Kong should make an effort to understand.

You’ll find when travelling to Hong Kong that this is a culturally diverse city with very modern attitudes. However, there are some cultural nuances that should be observed. For example, you should avoid sticking your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, as this gesture is reserved for funerals. You should also avoid sucking or biting your chopsticks when eating, as this is regarded as poor table etiquette.
