Montreal is Canada’s second largest city and is widely regarded as the cultural capital of the Quebec province. But even those accolades don’t do real justice to the true depth of history and the sheer scope of activities that are possible on a trip to the city. With plenty of flights to Montreal from a wide selection of international departure points, it’s even easier to explore this cosmopolitan metropolis. Well maintained cycling trails, picturesque parks and plenty of entertainment options and restaurants mean there’s always something to do.
Fly to Montreal with Qatar Airways and you’ll also be able to get to grips with its French-Canadian culture, as the city is the second only to Paris as the largest French-speaking urban area in the world.
Admiring the architecture and exploring the city’s history are two good reasons for a trip to Montreal. The city’s Notre-Dame Basilica may not be as famous as its Paris counterpart, but it does have some attractive 19th century architecture, and hosted the wedding of national icon Celine Dion. Montreal’s Olympic Stadium provides a more modern architectural spectacle. Nearby you’ll find the city’s innovative Biodome, which was once the Olympic Velodrome and now houses four different artificially recreated ecosystems.
Elsewhere there are many skyscrapers to admire, while a climb up to the top of Mount Royal will give you a superb birds-eye view of the city and some memorable holiday snaps of your trip to Montreal.
Montreal benefits from a wide range of both summer and winter leisure activities. In the summer months it has an almost Mediterranean climate, which is well suited to biking, hiking and water sports such as river surfing. Take a trip to Montreal during the winter months though, and you’ll find it has been completely transformed into a snowy playground, with ample opportunities for ice skating and cross-country skiing.
If you’d prefer to watch sports rather than take part in them then head to the Bell Centre and become a spectator of Canada’s national sport, Ice Hockey. To gain an even greater understanding of the local culture, enrol yourself in a French class during your trip to Montreal.
Montreal is one of North America’s most respected culinary destinations, and has a wide range of options for all budgets.
If you want to sample some of the traditional Quebec cuisine then try a “tourtière” (a type of meat pie) or enjoy a bowl of poutine – fries with gravy and cheese curds. You’ll also find no shortage of classic French dishes in many areas of the city, especially on Boulevard Saint-Laurent.
There are plenty of shopping opportunities worth travelling to Montreal for, and many of these aren’t as expensive as some other North American destinations. For well-known brands and department shopping take a trip to Rue Ste-Catherine, and find specialty goods on Boulevard Saint Laurent and Rue St-Viateur.
Flights to Montreal land at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport.
