VN Woman's Day
Sizzling nightlife, long beaches and luxury boat trips are just a few of the things that make flying to Miami special. Tucked away on the Southeast coast of Florida, the city has an enviable climate which, given its close proximity to the Bahamas, is hardly surprising.
When you’re not relaxing on the beach or enjoying a range of water sports, you can take some time to explore the Florida Everglades, or discover the city’s thriving Latin culture. Book a flight to Miami with Qatar Airways and discover New York and Washington’s boisterous younger brother.
Miami is a city whose development and tourism opportunities are inseparable from its location on the coast. Few people take a trip to Miami without embarking on at least a few boat tours, while Miami Beach is not just a place to soak up the sun, but also to spot a Hollywood star or two on vacation from LA.
As if that wasn’t enough, the city has a unique ecosystem worth exploring just outside its boundaries in the form of the Everglades, which is populated by numerous alligators. Further animal attractions can be found at the Miami Zoo, Miami Seaquarium and Jungle Island.
Some people make the trip to Miami just to spend time on its sun-kissed beaches and to indulge in some of the many activities on offer there. Choose from diving, kayaking, sailing, and fishing for starters, or take your time and try them all.
Hot air balloon rides and yacht charters are a good way of seeing more of the local surroundings during your trip to Miami. If you want to experience one of America’s national obsessions for yourself, head to Marlins Park in Little Havana, the stadium of the Miami Marlins Major League Baseball Team. During football season, the Miami Dolphins are often one of the country’s top teams. People don’t just go to an American football match for the sport, but for the razzmatazz and the half-time show too. So if your stay does coincide with a Dolphins home game, it’s definitely worth trying to get a ticket.
It’s also worth taking a look at the city’s cultural calendar prior to your stay, as it might coincide with one of Miami’s eclectic events. March sees the Ultra Music Festival and Carnival Miami, while the city is lit up by fireworks on July 4th for Independence Day. In December, visit Miami Beach for Art Basel.
After the day is done, head to South Beach for its legendary nightlife scene with countless numbers of restaurants and entertainment options.
Miami offers visitors a cornucopia of flavours from around the world, but is best known for its ‘New World’ cuisine. This fusion of different foods and dishes is based around local produce, but takes as its inspiration, recipes and cooking techniques from Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean.
Cuban cuisine is well represented in many of the city’s restaurants and diners, while food from Asia and the Middle East are increasingly easy to come by. Seafood lovers are also unlikely to be disappointed in Miami.
Miami has a number of main shopping areas, while you’ll find lots of tourist shops located along the seafront. Collins Avenue offers a diverse range of high-end retail opportunities, while South Beach is known for its fashion boutiques. If you’d like to have a proper American mall experience when you travel to Miami, then head to the huge Aventura Mall on Biscayne Boulevard, or the open-air CocoWalk on Grand Avenue.
Though Miami is a distinctly American city, more than a third of the population is of Cuban origin. There are also substantial Haitian, Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican communities within the city.
So although English is the main language of the city, Spanish and other languages are common in some areas.
Flights to Miami with Qatar Airways arrive at Miami International Airport just west of the city. It is an important hub for air traffic between North America, Europe and Latin America, which makes it an incredibly busy airport. Queues can be long, so ensure that you allow extra time when leaving Miami, particularly if you are flying to an international destination, as you may face long waits just to check your bags. Therefore, curb side check-in is an excellent option that can save a considerable amount of time.
Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. So before you fly to Miami please check the visa and passport requirements.
